As Claudia Larson, a single mother who recently lost her job, embarks on a flight from Chicago to Baltimore, she finds herself pouring her heart out on her younger brother Tommy’s voicemail. This Thanksgiving trip to her parents, Adele and Henry, serves as an essential respite after her job loss, particularly since her only child has chosen to spend the holiday with her boyfriend instead of joining her.

Upon her arrival in Baltimore, Claudia seeks comfort in reconnecting with Tommy, who she initially believes won’t be attending the family gathering. To her surprise, he arrives unexpectedly with his business partner Leo Fish—a man she mistakenly thinks might be Tommy’s new romantic interest. This misunderstanding leaves Claudia worrying even more about Tommy’s relationship status, especially given the absence of his longtime partner, Jack.

As Claudia navigates the intricate dynamics within her family, she runs into an old school acquaintance who boasts about her recent divorce, only adding to Claudia’s feelings of inadequacy. However, Leo proves to be a comforting presence, providing supportive conversation and helping to uplift her mood.

The chaos of Thanksgiving Day ensues when Aunt Gladys, Adele’s quirky sister, confesses her love for Henry, alarming the family with signs of her dementia. Chaos escalates as Tommy accidentally drops the turkey onto their conservative sister Joanne, igniting a fierce argument that uncovers a startling secret: Tommy had secretly married Jack months earlier during a beach ceremony.

In search of a peaceful escape from the family turmoil, Tommy and Claudia retreat to the kitchen for dinner, leaving the rest of the family to deal with their issues. After the meal, a spirited football game among the men devolves into a brawl between Walter, Joanne’s husband, and Tommy. Their fight is interrupted when Henry douses the combatants with a hose, leading to Walter departing with his family.

As calm returns, Henry answers a phone call from Jack, revealing that he and Tommy are still happy together, a revelation that sends shockwaves throughout the family. Meanwhile, Claudia and Leo drive Aunt Gladys home, later delivering leftovers to Joanne’s family. A dispute between the sisters ultimately resolves when Joanne tells Claudia to leave her alone.

In the car, Leo shares that Tommy showed him a picture of Claudia, which led him to visit Baltimore. As they approach their destination, an unexpected romantic moment occurs with a kiss between Leo and Claudia, signaling a new beginning for them.

As the night deepens at Claudia’s family home, the chemistry between Leo and Claudia intensifies, leading to a passionate kiss in the living room. Tommy, sensing their fervor, intervenes, reminding them that an early departure is necessary for the next day.

Come morning, Claudia wakes to see Tommy and Leo leaving, spurring her into action as she rushes to the airport. Determined, she boards a flight to Chicago—only to find Leo has taken the seat next to her, joining her on a journey back to their shared hometown. The plane hums softly around them, echoing the escalating tension as they fly towards a future that will significantly alter the trajectory of their lives.
