In Boston, Massachusetts, Andrew Morenski is placed under protective custody by the FBI as he prepares to testify against gangster Victor Kapados. As a key witness in a major stock scam case, his safety is paramount while awaiting the trial.

While awaiting his testimony, Andrew is taken by the FBI agents to a diner for breakfast. Their mundane outing turns tragic when a hit-man storms in, resulting in one agent being killed and another injured, forcing Andrew to flee for his life.

After the deadly incident, Andrew escapes by hitchhiking with a truck driver, eventually ending up in Topsail Bay, Delaware. He reaches out to his Aunt Lucy for help, seeking refuge from the mob.

To protect his identity, Andrew shaves his beard and dyes his hair blonde, adopting a new punk look. He trades his expensive coat for a worn black pea coat, preparing to enter a new life incognito.

When Andrew arrives at Topsail High School, the office staff mistake him for a new student due to his disguise. He decides to adopt the alias 'Maxwell Hauser', taken from a coffee can, to conceal his true identity.

Andrew's fifteen-year-old cousin, Patrick, is enrolled in the same class as him but remains unaware of who Andrew really is. As they develop a friendship, they aim to keep Andrew's true identity a secret from Aunt Lucy.

One year later, Andrew, now living under a new identity as 'Eddie Collins', encounters Ryan at the University of Iowa. Their nostalgic reunion hints at a brighter future together, despite the trials they've faced.
