Hellraisers

In Morocco, Frank Cotton buys a mysterious puzzle box said to open a realm of pleasure. He takes it to his bare attic and solves the puzzle, at which point hooked chains burst forth and tear him apart. A Cenobite immediately resets the puzzle and the room is restored to its original state.

Larry relocates to the same house with the intention of rebuilding his marriage to Julia. Unbeknownst to him, Julia once had an affair with Frank. Normal life quickly gives way to an atmosphere of danger as the past resurfaces.

While moving furniture, Larry cuts his hand and blood drips onto the attic floor. The blood resurrects Frank in a grotesque, resurrected form. The attic becomes the staging ground for Frank's return to power.

Julia lures men to the attic, bringing them home from bars where she meets them. Frank drains the life of each victim to regenerate his body. He explains that the box was supposed to give him access to new carnal pleasures, but instead summoned the Cenobites.

Kirsty, Larry's teenage daughter and Frank's niece, sees Julia bring a man home and follows her to the attic. She finds Frank and escapes with the puzzle box, collapsing shortly afterward. Her escape marks the start of a supernatural chase.

Awakening in a hospital, Kirsty solves the box out of curiosity and unintentionally summons the Cenobites and a monster called the Engineer. The Cenobites reveal their nature as explorers who derive pleasure from pain. Kirsty narrowly escapes their pursuit.

The Cenobites recount that they are explorers rather than angels or demons and can no longer differentiate pain from pleasure. They resolve to recapture Frank and can spare Kirsty if she helps locate him. Kirsty informs them that Frank has already escaped their grasp.

Kirsty returns home to find Frank has killed Larry and taken on his identity by wearing his skin. Julia shows her what is purported to be Frank's flayed corpse in the attic. The two women brace for the truth as dark forces gather.

In the attic, Frank reveals his true identity to Kirsty and makes a crude advance. When she rejects him, he tries to kill her to complete his rejuvenation. He accidentally stabs Julia instead and drains her life without remorse.

The Cenobites appear after hearing Frank confess to killing Kirsty and move to stop him. They bind and tear him apart with chains, determining he is the target they seek. Kirsty watches as the hunter becomes the hunted and the danger narrows to Frank.

Kirsty grabs the puzzle box from Julia's dead hands and reverses the motions needed to open it, banishing the Cenobites back to their realm. The house trembles as the immediate threat fades. Kirsty and Steve prepare to escape the collapsing structure.

Steve arrives and the two flee the burning, collapsing house. A vagrant who has been stalking Kirsty retrieves the box from the pyre and transforms into a winged skeletal creature, flying away. The box ends up back with the same merchant who sold it to Frank, continuing the cycle.

The merchant who originally sold the box to Frank ends up with the artifact again, ready to offer it to a new customer. The cycle of temptation, danger and otherworldly experiences begins anew in the shadows of the world.
