Heaven Only Knows

Adam 'Duke' Byron is born in 1858 without a soul due to a Heaven error. The Book of Destiny predicts he should marry a minister's daughter in 1885 and set a moral example, but he grows up as a saloon keeper in Glacier, Montana.

In 1887 Michael is sent to Earth to guide Duke toward his destined life, but he must do so as a human being, without miracles. He arrives in Glacier, Montana and begins to influence events from the shadows.

Duke and Bill Plummer are rival saloon owners who also partner in a mining venture. A dispute closes the mine, leaving many townspeople destitute and hungry for relief.

Bill hires the Kansas City Kid to kill Duke. When Plummer suspects Duke knows about the plan, Duke mistakes Michael for the Kid and hires him, raising the stakes of the feud.

Treason, Duke's satanic henchman, fires at Michael, escalating danger around town. Drusilla Wainwright storms into the Copper Queen and slaps Duke, challenging his arrogance.

The Kansas City Kid makes an attempt to shoot Duke, but Michael foils the plan. This incident shifts Duke's view of Michael and deepens their uneasy alliance.

Duke realizes Michael isn't the Kid and hires him as an ally. Ginger, Duke's showgirl girlfriend, takes a liking to Michael, adding tension to the relationships.

Plummer's men trap Duke inside the burning Copper Queen. Michael opens the outside passage to rescue him, and they take refuge in the local school as flames rage around them.

While waiting in safety, Duke confesses he feels destined for something greater than his current life. He shares a kiss with Drusilla, who resists at first but soon reciprocates.

Sheriff Bodine engineers a showdown between Duke and Plummer for sole ownership of the mine. Duke accepts the duel, even though he is at a great disadvantage against Plummer's skilled marksmanship.

Duke is wounded, but Plummer is blinded by sunlight and defeated. Speck runs to Duke, pursued by Judd, who is shot saving the boy; Duke then uses his last shot to kill Plummer.

With Plummer dead, vigilantes plot to lynch Duke. Drusilla persuades Duke to flee, and she agrees to go with him.

The mob shifts its fury toward Michael, but Duke rides back with Drusilla to save him, redefining the town's moral order. Treason vanishes, signaling a turning point.

That night, Michael rides off on a special coach to Heaven, taking Speck with him. Speck's tearful mother senses her child's fate with a knowing heartbreak.
