What Happens in Hanna K.: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Hanna K. (1983) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Hanna Kaufman [Jill Clayburgh] centers on a child of Holocaust survivors and an American-Jewish immigrant to Israel who becomes a court-appointed lawyer assigned to defend Salim Bakri Mohammad Bakri, a Palestinian accused of terrorism and infiltration. Salim claims that he is trying to regain possession of his family house. Hanna saves him from a jail sentence, but he is deported to Jordan.

Salim eventually returns, is jailed for illegal immigration, and again asks for her services. Hanna investigates the story and discovers that Salim's family home has become a tourist attraction in Kafr Rimon, a settlement built and inhabited by Russian Jews. Bakri's former village Kufr Rumaneh has disappeared, leaving only a few stones and trees.

The state's attorneys offer Hanna a deal: if she drops the proceedings, they will arrange for Salim to become a South African citizen, and he can then return to Israel and try to get his property back.

Hanna is confronted with the fact that one legacy of the Holocaust has been the dispossession of Palestinians, while her colleagues press the case for defending Israel even if Palestinians are denied their rights.

Hanna K. Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Hanna K. (1983): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why is Hanna Kaufman assigned to defend Salim Bakri?

Hanna is a court-appointed lawyer in Israel, meaning the court assigns her to defend Salim whether she wants to or not. As a new immigrant and lawyer, she has limited ability to refuse cases. This assignment sets up the central conflict of the film, forcing her to represent a Palestinian accused of terrorism while grappling with her own identity as a Jewish descendant of Holocaust survivors.

  • court-appointed lawyer
  • legal representation
  • Palestinian defendant
  • Israel
Q2

Why is Salim deported to Jordan after Hanna wins his case?

Although Hanna successfully saves Salim from a jail sentence in court, the Israeli authorities exercise their administrative power to deport him to Jordan. The legal victory in court does not override border control and immigration enforcement. Deportation reveals how court decisions can be circumvented by executive action, demonstrating the limits of legal recourse for Palestinians facing security-related charges.

  • deportation
  • Jordan border
  • legal victory
  • security charges
Q3

What does Hanna discover about Salim's family home?

Hanna discovers that Salim's family house in the village of Kufr Rumaneh has become a tourist attraction in Kafr Rimon, a settlement built and populated by Russian Jews. The house has been repurposed while the original village has largely disappeared, only a few stones and trees remain. This discovery transforms the case from a simple property dispute into a question about historical erasure and memory.

  • tourist attraction
  • Kafr Rimon
  • Kufr Rumaneh
  • settlement
  • property dispute
Q4

What deal do the state attorneys offer Hanna?

The state's attorneys offer Hanna a bargain: if she drops the proceedings, they will arrange for Salim to become a South African citizen, which would allow him to legally return to Israel and pursue his property claim. This deal links legal outcomes to political considerations about citizenship and settlement rights, essentially trading one form of statelessness for another.

  • South African citizenship
  • deal
  • state attorneys
  • property claim
Q5

What is the connection between the Holocaust and Palestinian dispossession in the film?

The film confronts Hanna, and the viewer, with the moral paradox that one legacy of the Holocaust (the creation of a Jewish homeland) has been the dispossession of Palestinians. Hanna's colleagues argue that defending Israel requires accepting that Palestinians may be denied their rights. This thematic tension forces Hanna to reconcile her family's trauma with the parallel displacement of another people.

Foreshadowing: The film introduces Hanna as a child of Holocaust survivors early on, establishing her personal connection to Jewish displacement that will later contrast with Palestinian displacement.

  • Holocaust
  • Nakba
  • dispossession
  • Jewish refugees
  • Palestinian displacement
Q6

Why does Salim return to Israel after being deported?

Salim returns to Israel despite the deportation because he continues fighting for his legal right to reclaim his family property. He is subsequently jailed for illegal immigration. This cycle demonstrates how the legal system offers no lasting solution for Palestinians caught between deportation and the inability to legally return to their homeland.

Foreshadowing: The initial deportation foreshadows the repeated cycle of legal attempts and administrative setbacks that define Salim's struggle.

  • illegal immigration
  • return to Israel
  • jail
  • property claim
Q7

Why does Hanna investigate Salim's case beyond the courtroom?

After Salim's deportation and return, Hanna shifts from purely legal defense to personal investigation because she recognizes that understanding the full story is essential to representing him effectively. Her investigation uncovers the truth about his family's home and the erasure of Kufr Rumaneh, transforming her understanding of the case from a routine legal matter into a profound moral inquiry.

  • investigation
  • legal strategy
  • property history
  • village erasure
Q8

Why does the film leave Hanna's decision unresolved?

The ending remains ambiguous because the film prioritizes the moral inquiry over providing a neat resolution. Hanna must choose between accepting the pragmatic deal (which helps Salim but validates a flawed system) or continuing to fight on principle (which may lead to nothing). This ambiguity reflects the film's argument that there are no easy answers to the conflict between justice, security, and historical injustice.

  • ambiguous ending
  • moral dilemma
  • decision
  • justice system
Q9

What happened to Kufr Rumaneh, Salim's original village?

Kufr Rumaneh, the village where Salim's family home was located, has been almost completely erased. Only a few stones and trees remain as evidence of the village's existence. The land now contains Kafr Rimon, a settlement built for Russian Jewish immigrants. This erasure exemplifies the broader process of dispossession that the film examines.

  • village erasure
  • Kafr Rimon
  • Kufr Rumaneh
  • depopulated village
  • Israeli settlements
Q10

Why do Hanna's colleagues support accepting the deal?

Hanna's colleagues press for the deal as a pragmatic solution, arguing it minimizes security risks and provides a workable path forward for Salim. They view the arrangement as the most realistic option given the political circumstances, prioritizing practical outcomes over absolute justice. This positions Hanna against her peers in a debate about whether legal strategy should prioritize compromise or principle.

  • colleagues
  • pragmatic solution
  • security
  • legal strategy
  • Israel courts
Q11

Why is Hanna's background as a Holocaust survivor's daughter important?

Hanna's identity as the daughter of Holocaust survivors is central to the film's moral complexity. Her family's experience of genocide and displacement creates personal stakes in the Jewish narrative of finding a homeland. However, this same background makes her confrontation with Palestinian dispossession more painful, she must reckon with the fact that her people's salvation came at the cost of another's displacement.

Foreshadowing: The opening establishes Hanna's immigrant background and family history, setting up the thematic collision between Jewish and Palestinian experiences of displacement.

  • Holocaust survivors
  • Jewish immigration
