What Happens in Ham on Rye: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Ham on Rye (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The film opens in a park at a child’s birthday party, where someone is attempting to light a firework for the kids’ amusement just as the opening credits begin to roll.

In Haley's hometown, the teenagers dress in their finest outfits for what is described as the most important day of their lives. With a mix of nervous thrill and lingering doubt, they embark on a scattered pilgrimage across town toward an unknown fate. Haley moves at a more reluctant pace, openly questioning the timeworn tradition and the bizarre coming-of-age ritual that awaits them at their destination. She voices her concerns to her two friends, Trish and Gwen, who laugh off her worries and urge her to focus on something else. Meanwhile, one boy, Jim, walking with his group toward Monty’s, suddenly suffers a suspected panic attack and lapses into muteness. His friends press on to Monty’s, debating how best to help him.

When they finally arrive at Monty’s, a beloved local delicatessen, the teens participate in a surreal ceremony of food, dance, and romantic tension that will determine the course of their lives forever. For many, the ritual promises an instantaneous escape from suburban monotony, while a few unchosen souls remain trapped in a vacant, unfulfilling hometown awaiting an uncertain future.

During the ritual, Haley exits Monty’s and later cannot reach either [Trish] and [Gwen], who were selected during a partner ritual. She wanders home in a subdued mood, attempts to contact them multiple times to no avail, and shares an awkward dinner with her parents that underscores the growing distance between her expectations and the world around her.

Back at the park, Jim is hospitalized with a broken leg after a fall into a manhole, and his burdened, disappointed mother accompanies him to a dinner before wheels him in a wheelchair to an abandoned warehouse, leaving him alone with a sparse bag of supplies.

Elsewhere, three burnouts linger over their own existential unease while munching stolen Slim Jims in an empty parking lot. They spend time on hoverboards, then head to a party attended by others living similar, hollow lives. One of the attendees is an aspiring guitarist who works at Monty’s; he clearly resents his job and the fate that seems to bind him to this place. Realizing that a musician’s dream may never come true, he tears at his guitar strings, smashes the instrument with his foot, and his burnout companions drive him home.

The following morning, Haley searches for her friends again, visiting their homes to no avail. She returns to the park seen at the film’s start, observing the people around her as the child’s party continues to unfold, the town quietly moving forward even as some lives diverge dramatically from the expected path.

Ham on Rye Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Ham on Rye (2019): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

What happens at Monty's deli in the movie?

Monty's is the site of a surreal coming-of-age ritual where teenagers are paired up through a mysterious selection process. Those who get chosen appear to escape from their suburban lives instantly, while the unchosen are left behind in their hometown. The ritual involves food, dance, and romantic tension, with the outcome seemingly determining each teen's future.

Foreshadowing: The film's opening scene at a child's birthday party with a firework hints at the ritualistic nature of events to come.

  • monty's deli
  • ritual
  • coming of age
  • ceremony
  • teenagers
Q2

Why isn't Haley chosen during the ritual?

Haley is not selected because she leaves the ritual before the pairing occurs. She steps away from the ceremony to try contacting her friends Trish and Gwen, who were chosen. By not staying through the entire ritual, she misses her chance to be selected and ends up stranded in her hometown.

Foreshadowing: Haley's reluctance and open questioning of the tradition earlier in the film foreshadows her exclusion from the ritual's benefits.

  • haley
  • not chosen
  • ritual
  • trish
  • gwen
Q3

What happens to Jim after his panic attack?

Jim suffers a panic attack on the way to Monty's and lapses into muteness. His friends leave him behind to continue to the ritual. He later falls into a manhole and breaks his leg. His mother takes him to dinner, then wheels him to an abandoned warehouse and abandons him there with minimal supplies, treating him as a disappointment.

Foreshadowing: Jim's panic attack and muteness signal his inability to participate in the ritual, marking him as one of the unchosen from the start.

  • jim
  • panic attack
  • abandoned
  • warehouse
  • leg broken
Q4

How does the ritual decide who escapes and who stays?

The exact mechanism of selection is never explained, but it appears to be instantaneous and predetermined. Some teens are chosen during a partner ritual inside Monty's, granting them immediate escape from suburbia. Those not chosen remain trapped in their hometown. The selection seems to favor those who fully commit to the ritual's proceedings.

Foreshadowing: The teens' nervous excitement and descriptions of it as "the most important day" hint that fate is being decided.

  • escape
  • selection
  • fate
  • chosen
  • ritual
Q5

Why does the guitarist smash his guitar at the party?

The aspiring guitarist works at Monty's deli and realizes his musical dreams will never come true. Overwhelmed by frustration and resentment toward his fate, he tears at his guitar strings with his teeth and smashes the instrument with his foot. This outburst represents the crushing of dreams for those bound to their hometown.

Foreshadowing: The guitarist's resentment at working at Monty's hints at his suppressed frustration.

  • guitarist
  • guitar
  • smash
  • dreams
  • frustrated
Q6

What happens to the teenagers who aren't chosen in the ritual?

Those not chosen remain trapped in their suburban hometown, living unfulfilling lives. They drift through empty existences, attending parties and moving through life without purpose. The film shows burnouts and other unchosen characters wandering aimlessly, representing those left behind by the ritual's selection process.

Foreshadowing: The description of some teens being "destined to remain" establishes this outcome early.

  • not chosen
  • left behind
  • suburbia
  • burnouts
  • stuck
Q7

What does the ending with the park signify?

The ending shows Haley returning to the same park from the opening scene, where a child's birthday party continues as if no time has passed. This cyclical imagery suggests the ritual's effects perpetuate across generations - some escape while others remain trapped in an endless loop. Haley observes the ongoing cycle, confirming her new status as one left behind.

Foreshadowing: The opening party scene directly mirrors the ending, establishing the cyclical nature of the ritual.

  • park
  • ending
  • cycle
  • birthday party
  • haley
Q8

Why does Jim's mother abandon him at the warehouse?

Jim's mother treats him as a disappointment after he fails to participate in the ritual and gets injured. She takes him to dinner, then wheels him to an abandoned warehouse and leaves him there alone with minimal supplies. This reflects how families respond to those deemed "failures" by the ritual's standards - they are cast aside rather than supported.

Foreshadowing: Jim's failure to reach Monty's marks him as a disappointment before his abandonment occurs.

  • jim's mother
  • warehouse
  • abandonment
  • family
  • disappointment
Q9

Who are the burnout characters in the movie?

The burnouts are three teenagers who were not chosen during the ritual and represent those left behind in suburbia. They spend their time in an empty parking lot eating stolen Slim Jims, riding hoverboards, and driving to parties with others who also weren't selected. Their storyline provides a parallel view of unfulfilled lives.

Foreshadowing: The burnouts appear after the main ritual, showing the alternative path for the unchosen.

  • burnouts
  • slim jims
  • hoverboards
  • party
  • not chosen
Q10

Is the Monty's ritual magical or just metaphorical?

The film presents the ritual as ambiguously magical - the escape appears to happen instantaneously for those chosen, suggesting supernatural elements. However, the film maintains ambiguity through its surreal, darkly humorous tone. The ritual functions both as literal supernatural ceremony and as a metaphor for the way opportunities and life paths diverge in adolescence.

Foreshadowing: The surreal atmosphere throughout, including the strange ceremony details, supports both interpretations.

  • ritual
  • magical
  • metaphorical
  • supernatural
  • ambiguous
