Quintero, Fernando Rey, a revolutionary in late 19th century Mexico, is seized by the Federales as he tries to mobilize those who oppose President Díaz. Before his imprisonment, he entrusts his lieutenant, Maximiliano O’Leary, Reni Santoni, with $600 to keep the fight alive. The money comes with strings and expectations: bandit boss Carlos Lobero, Frank Silvera, demands that it be used to arm a renewed push against the dictatorship. But Max has his own sense of loyalty and strategy, and soon his mission takes a sharper direction as he follows a tip about a legendary American gunman.

Chris Adams, George Kennedy, is the man Max tracks down—an enigmatic, laconic figure whose reputation rests on both restraint and deadly precision. Chris proves his mettle in a tense moment, liberating a prisoner from a rigged trial first through cleverness and then through the swift, almost choreographed accuracy of a gunfighter. Seeing a chance to make a decisive impact, Chris agrees to lead a dangerous rescue operation to free Quintero and restore a spark of hope to those who resist tyranny. To make the bid possible, he uses five carefully chosen allies, recruiting individuals whose skills fill different corners of the battlefield.

The team assembles in rapid fashion: Keno, Monte Markham, a former horse thief who excels in hand-to-hand combat; Cassie, Bernie Casey, a strong, resourceful former slave who can handle dynamite and push the team through tight spots; Slater, Joe Don Baker, a one-armed showman with sharpshooting flair; a tubercular wrangler known as P.J., Scott Thomas; and Levi Morgan, James Whitmore, an aging family man whose true worth lies in his exceptional knife-throwing and steady nerve. Together they set out on a perilous journey toward the Mexican interior, driven not only by the mission but by a growing sense of solidarity that begins to soften their mercenary edges.

On the way, the group witnesses the harsh realities faced by peasants under the regime they oppose. Their path crosses with Emiliano Zapata, Tony Davis, a political prisoner’s boy whose presence hints at the wider struggle unfolding beyond the immediate rescue. A pretty peasant girl, Tina, Wende Wagner, enters the tale as well, forming a quiet, budding bond with P.J. that threads through the dangers of their march. Tina’s affection adds a human dimension to the mission, reminding the rescuers that the fight has personal stakes for real people and families.

Back at the prison, Lobero learns that Max refused to convert the fund into firearms for his own men and refuses to let his crew join the rescue. Realizing that he cannot win by force alone, Chris makes a bold move: he frees a prison gang and also brings Zapata’s father into the fold, teaching them military tactics and turning a disparate group of captives into a credible fighting force. The transformation is slow and grueling, but it injects the mission with renewed energy and unpredictability, blending veteran grit with improvised street-smarts.

The ensuing battle tests every fighter’s limits. As they begin the return journey, the trio makes a symbolic decision to leave behind the remaining $600 as a reminder of the peasants’ commitment and the costs of rebellion.
