In February 1942, amid the ongoing Battle of the Atlantic, convoy HX-25 departs towards Liverpool. This convoy consists of 37 Allied ships, embarking on a perilous voyage across the treacherous waters of the Atlantic.

The USS Keeling DD-548, known as 'Greyhound', is led by Commander Ernest Krause, portrayed by Tom Hanks. Despite his naval training, this mission represents Krause's first command during wartime, introducing a wave of uncertainty mixed with determination.

Two months prior to the mission, Krause shares a heartfelt moment with his romantic partner, Evelyn Frechette, in New York City. They exchange Christmas gifts and discuss their hopes for a shared future, highlighting the personal stakes involved in his deployment.

As the convoy enters the 'Black Pit', a zone devoid of air support, tension escalates among the crew. They are nearly 50 hours away from safety, intensifying the sense of vulnerability they face against the lurking threat of U-boats.

The atmosphere turns tense when Greyhound detects the presence of an enemy submarine. Employing his skills, Krause successfully detects and sinks the U-boat with depth charges, marking a significant early victory for the convoy.

The victory is overshadowed by distress calls from the rear of the convoy as a Greek merchant ship is attacked. Krause displays tactical flexibility by maneuvering Greyhound to evade incoming torpedoes while managing to rescue sailors from the sinking ship.

Reports indicate the presence of a wolf pack consisting of six U-boats closing in on the convoy. Krause deduces their strategy, understanding that they are waiting for nightfall to launch a coordinated assault on the vulnerable ships.

The conflict escalates further when an oil tanker is struck by a U-boat's torpedo. Krause faces a critical decision, ultimately prioritizing the rescue of endangered sailors over pursuing the attacking submarine.

As the confrontation continues, multiple merchant vessels succumb to strikes from enemy fire. With resources running low, the crisis deepens, and Krause grapples with the reality of their dire situation as casualties mount.

Tragedy strikes as the crew suffers significant losses during a fierce engagement. Lieutenant Commander Cleveland is killed in action, plunging the morale of Krause and the remaining crew into despair.

With just 14 hours left until air support arrives, Krause sends a desperate radio message requesting assistance. This call for help highlights the dire circumstances faced by Greyhound and its crew, amplifying the sense of urgency.

As the remaining U-boats launch their final attack, Krause and his crew brace for a last stand. In a climactic firefight, Greyhound successfully takes down a lead U-boat just as air support from the British RAF Coastal Command arrives.

The arrival of air support shifts the tide of battle, allowing Greyhound to maintain its course and fend off the remaining U-boat threats. The coordination between naval and air forces proves crucial in securing the convoy's safety.

After the harrowing ordeal at sea, Krause and his crew receive confirmation of relief from HMS Diamond. They head toward Derry, relieved yet reflecting on the heavy toll of their experience during the convoy’s battle.

As the surviving crew prepares for repairs, Commander Krause takes a moment to retreat to his cabin. The events of the mission weigh heavily on him, but he is grateful for the lives saved and the successful sinking of enemy U-boats.
