Grace

After two failed attempts to have a child, Michael and Madeline Matheson succeed on their third try. They seek help from Madeline's midwife ex-girlfriend, Patricia, to enable an unorthodox delivery. Patricia agrees to assist, and the couple prepares for an unconventional birth.

One night, Michael and the unborn baby are killed in a car accident. Madeline survives and is left to face the loss. The tragedy sets in motion a decision to carry Grace to term despite the danger.

Grace is delivered and, despite being stillborn at first, is miraculously alive. Madeline names her Grace and accepts the unexpected miracle as the baby begins her life under abnormal circumstances. The birth occurs within the confines of Madeline's home.

Grace attracts flies with a putrid scent and cannot digest ordinary breast milk, often vomiting. While Madeline nurses, Grace feeds from a breast that is bleeding, tying her nourishment to blood. The mother's bond with Grace deepens amid the odd, unsettling signs.

Vivian, Michael's domineering mother, insists on visiting Grace and pressures Madeline. She enlists Dr. Richard Sohn, an obstetrician, to gather proof that Madeline is an unfit mother. The two introduce a new threat to Madeline's fragile grip on Grace.

Dr. Sohn visits the house to assess Grace and Madeline's care, hoping to document neglect or risk. Madeline, weakened by ongoing blood loss from nursing, allows him to examine Grace. The tense visit foreshadows the lengths she'll go to protect her daughter.

Afraid that Sohn will take Grace away, Madeline kills the obstetrician to prevent removal. She drains his blood into a bottle, a grisly act that marks a turning point in the story. The house becomes a crime scene fueled by desperation.

Vivian arrives and finds Grace in her crib with a bottle of blood spilled nearby. Madeline pursues but Vivian manages to grab Grace and flee, leaving the house behind as the tension escalates. The confrontation escalates into open danger as Vivian arms herself with a hammer.

Patricia arrives after the violent events and witnesses Grace drinking blood, signaling the depth of Grace's inhuman feeding. She observes the bleeding victims and the entangled fate of Madeline and Vivian. The maternal bond is now shadowed by brutality and secrecy.

Some time later, Patricia drives a motor home through the desert and contemplates Grace's survival and care. She asserts that with the right diet, Grace can continue to be fed and raised. Madeline reveals that Grace has begun teething, exposing her mutilated breast, a disturbing sign of what Grace needs to grow.
