In the fictional Gujarati village of Ranjhaar, two ancient clans, the Rajadi and the Sanera, have been locked in a centuries‑old feud over the unfettered manufacture and sale of arms. A violent clash sparks when Bhavani Gulshan Devaiah, a Sanera, fires at the son of Meghji Bhai Abhimanyu Singh, a Rajadi chieftain. Meghji Bhai nearly strikes Bhavani down, but his younger brother Ram Ranveer Singh steps in to intervene. Ram is a wanderer who traffics in stolen cars and pornography, yet he is driven by a stubborn hope: to broker a lasting truce between the warring sides.
During Holi, Ram Ranveer Singh boldly enters the Sanera household and flirts with Leela Deepika Padukone. The two fall in love and secretly plan to elope, but a grim sequence of events interrupts their dreams when Leela’s elder brother Kanji Bhai Sharad Kelkar accidentally kills Ram’s brother, and Ram retaliates by killing Kanji Bhai. Despite the bloodshed, Ram and Leela marry and begin life together, but their happiness is short‑lived. Ram’s friends betray them by alerting Leela’s family to their whereabouts, and Leela is forcibly taken back home by Bhavani, her cousin, while Ram is celebrated by his own clan for damaging the rival’s honor and is elevated to chieftain.
Leela’s mother, Dhankor Baa Supriya Pathak, pushes for an engagement with an NRI for her daughter. Leela refuses, clutching Ram’s wedding ring, which becomes a symbol of their bond. In response, Dhankor Baa cuts off Leela’s finger, and Ram responds by severing his own. Gripped by desperation, Leela sends Rasila Richa Chadha, Kanji’s widow, to issue an ultimatum to Ram to take her away. Rasila is assaulted by Ram’s friends, and when Dhankor Baa learns of this, she orders an attack on Kesar [Barkha Bisht], Meghji’s widow, intensifying the already fragile cycle of violence.
Ram storms Leela’s house once more, asking Dhankor Baa to consider peace. She replies by inviting him to celebrate Navratri with the intention of killing him, but Bhavani secretly shoots Dhankor Baa instead, attempting to pin the blame on the Rajadi clan. With her mother injured, Leela is proclaimed chieftain and negotiates a fragile peace with Ram, dividing the village’s travel routes and trades on the condition that the Saneras and Rajadis will never again mingle.
Yet Bhavani has sinister plans. He uncovers a deceitful ruse that leads Leela to sign a document ordering the killings of the entire Rajadi clan. As Dusshera arrives and the Ramlila parade winds down, the Rajadi community suffers heavy losses and the village stands on the brink of all‑out war. In a moment of tragic clarity, Ram and Leela realize they can never be together under this feud and shoot each other, unaware that Dhankor Baa has had a change of heart and has killed Bhavani, ordering peace between the two clans. The lovers are dead, and only then do the two clans come together to cremate their bodies, a stark reminder of the costs of a feud that endured for centuries.
