The film opens with Deepthi learning that her father has died. She and her husband Chandu return to their village and reunite with family, but tension bubbles beneath the surface. Her brother Ramaraju, the local sub-inspector, tries to reach out, yet Deepthi shuts him out and heads straight to the house of her ex, Jayakrishna, traveling in his jeep with her close friend Padmaja. On the road they also notice a troubled couple, Murali and Deepika, whose quarrel mirrors Deepthi’s own past, prompting her to recount the story that binds them all.
In the backstory, [Jayakrishna], the son of a milkman, studies in the same college as Deepthi and falls in love with her from afar. He is darker in complexion and comes from a poorer background, which prevents him from openly declaring his feelings. About a year later, after being teased by seniors who mistake his affection for impropriety, he is wrongly blamed for “teasing girls” but is cleared after Deepthi and her friends advocate for him. Yet Jayakrishna’s earned confidence makes him bold, and he begins to stand up for himself.
Despite the risk of discovery, Deepthi and Jayakrishna decide to keep their relationship secret. With Deepthi’s encouragement, he fights back against the bullies, gaining further courage. Their bond grows stronger as friends Padmaja and Bala Yesu “Balu” keep the romance quiet as well. Things seem to be going well until a festival day when the college principal denies Jayakrishna a chance to speak on stage because of his skin tone. Fueled by a sense of insult, Jayakrishna delivers a fearless speech about color discrimination on the festival stage, before a chief guest who does not fully understand Telugu and interprets it as a self-serving demonstration.
The principal and resentful seniors vow revenge. On Deepthi’s birthday, Jayakrishna meets her in an empty classroom, but the room is locked and the pair are accused of an amorous affair. Ramaraju reacts with fury and separates them, sending Deepthi away from the village. Jayakrishna is beaten, and he later hopes to leave for college with Deepthi, but the chain of events takes a darker turn. As Deepthi arrives to collect her hall ticket, Jayakrishna appears and escapes with her, while Ramaraju is left grappling with the situation.
The lovers, feeling emboldened, begin to imagine a future together. Padmaja and Deepthi began to recall the true sequence of events: Jayakrishna’s certificates are burned by Ramaraju to prevent him from continuing his studies, and a grave act follows—Lakshmi, a calf Jayakrishna lovingly raised and named after his late mother, is killed. The butchered calf is cooked into beef biryani and fed to Jayakrishna, who is misled into believing it is mutton biryani. When he protests, Ramaraju severely injures him, breaking his leg and leaving him unable to walk properly.
The fateful night comes when Jayakrishna meets Deepthi as she arrives to receive her hall ticket. They decide to take their own lives by poisoned meals, but tragedy strikes sooner: Jayakrishna dies on the spot, while Deepthi is rescued by Ramaraju. Balu is left distraught and fractured by the violence around them. The story lingers on the lingering consequences of the couple’s doomed romance and the town’s complicity in the tragedy.
In the final act, Deepthi learns that there is no photograph of Jayakrishna in the village. She carves a portrait of him and christens it the Colour Photo, ensuring that his memory remains, even as the community tries to erase it. The film ends with Deepthi confronting the aftermath of love, violence, and memory, leaving viewers to ponder the costs of prejudice and the resilience needed to tell a story that color cannot erase.
