Gloria! (2024) Plot Summary Explained

Set in late 18th-century Venice, the story takes place within a musical school for orphaned girls. A servant named Teresa possesses a deep love for the music surrounding her and discovers a piano-forte hidden in a storeroom. Together with four other girls, she begins practicing music, though tensions arise with Lucia, who dislikes Teresa. To maintain peace, the girls use an hourglass to take turns playing the instrument.

Meanwhile, the school's director, Perlina, is struggling to compose a piece of music to welcome the new Pope, Papa Pio VII. Although Lucia offers her own work to help, Perlina rudely rejects her. Following a heartbreaking letter revealing that her betrothal has been called off, a distraught Lucia attempts to commit suicide.

The plot thickens when Perlina sells the piano to cover a friend's debts. Upon discovering that the instrument actually belonged to the orphans and not the director, Teresa demands its return. She leverages a dark secret to get her way, threatening to expose that the Governor raped her and took her son away unless the piano is returned and Lucia's composition is used for the papal performance.

During the actual performance, the girls lock Perlina behind a wall so they can perform their own music. The result is absolute chaos; while some of the audience is delighted, others are appalled, and the Pope is left angry. In the midst of the turmoil, the Governor suffers a fatal heart attack.

In the epilogue, it is revealed that Teresa is living with her son and his step-mother. She receives a letter from the other girls, who have since formed a successful travelling musical group.
