Two young women, Anna and Françoise, travel by car through the Auvergne. After they run out of gas near a curious village, they spend the night in a barn where they share an intimate moment. The next morning, [Anna] is gone, and a dwarf in medieval garb guides [Françoise] through a forest (later identified as Brocéliande) to a tranquil lake, where a magic canoe carries her to an island and then to a castle where scantily clad women frolic and kiss, overseen by the dwarf Gurth [Alfred Baillou]. In this eerie realm, [Françoise] is interviewed by Morgan le Fay, and bathed by a circle of women. Gurth’s exclusive monologue reveals his grim role: he supplies the women to Morgan and harbors ambitions to seize control himself.

During dinner, Morgan le Fay and [Françoise] discuss love and beauty, and Morgan lays bare that time itself is under her control. She proceeds to caress and kiss [Françoise], while Morgan’s note-worthy entourage wonders if they have been forgotten. Morgan offers immortality and beauty; if the offer is refused, the victim faces a life of abjection among an older cohort. Back on the mortal side, [Anna] lies bound in the basement, and she eventually accepts the deal, while [Françoise] escapes to search for the boat. She manages to swim across the lake, only to find Morgan waiting for her on the far shore—wherever she turns, Morgan appears—and guides her back to the castle, promising to teach her magic.

[Françoise], however, plots with Gurth to escape, and a forthcoming feast seems ripe for plunder. During the festivities, dances unfold and groups of women engage in various kinds of lovemaking; [Françoise] makes love to the woman who wears the magic tunic and slips away with it. The necklace is stolen as well. Now wearing the invisibility tunic and the necklace that controls the boat, [Françoise] only lacks Morgan’s topaz globe to leave the forest. Gurth is accused and condemned to blindness, muteness, and leglessness. In a final twist, he gives [Françoise] his “ring of life” so she can escape; Gurth dies instantly, and [Françoise] flees the castle, mounting a horse that appears at the last moment and riding toward the village just in time for a funeral procession. Yet she calls out for Morgan, who materializes at once, and Morgan escorts her back to the barn, where [Anna] sleeps beside [Françoise], with Morgan watching over them all.
