A taxi driver picks up a woman running through the streets. The woman is Robin "Bobbie" Williams, Anne Francis, and because she appears injured, she is taken to see Dr. Mitchell, Lloyd Nolan in her apartment building, even though he is a psychologist.

Reluctantly, she reveals to Dr. Mitchell that she is a high-priced call girl. Bobbie agrees to a few sessions with the doctor and tells her story.

Her boyfriend, Larry Taylor, John Kerr, was supposed to protect Bobbie on a job. Instead he sits in a bar flirting with a young woman named Lisa Mae Bailey, Eileen Fulton, while an elderly john named Dan Shelton, Lauren Gilbert, repeatedly strikes Bobbie with a cane.

Rowena Claiborne, Kay Medford, who arranges "dates" for the prostitutes, persuades Lisa Mae Bailey to join Bobbie on a night out with two wealthy clients. One of the men, Jason Franklin, Arthur Storch, claims to be offended when he discovers that these women are hookers. He intimidates Lisa, who recoils from him and falls through a window to her death.

Rather than sympathize, Larry is angry at Bobbie for costing them future earnings with Rowena. He physically assaults her. Bobbie is ashamed of her life and finds a job as a file clerk, hoping that no one in her office will discover the truth about her past.

Q1

Why was Bobbie running through the streets injured?

A.

The film opens with Bobbie running through city streets in distress, obviously injured. This sets the tone for her traumatic story, though the specific event that caused her injuries is the assault by elderly client Dan Shelton, who repeatedly struck her with a cane during a date. The taxi driver who picks her up sees she needs help and takes her to Dr. Mitchell's office in her apartment building.

Q2

Why does Larry assault Bobbie after Lisa's death?

A.

Larry's reaction reveals his selfish and violent nature. Instead of showing sympathy for Bobbie after Lisa's accidental death, Larry is furious that the incident would ruin their future earnings with Rowena, the madam. He physically beats Bobbie, blaming her for the financial consequences, which demonstrates the abusive dynamic of their relationship and deepens Bobbie's shame and fear.

Earlier, Larry is shown abandoning his protective duties by flirting with another woman at a bar while Bobbie faced danger.

Q3

Why does Bobbie see a psychologist instead of a medical doctor?

A.

Bobbie is taken to Dr. Mitchell, a psychologist, rather than a traditional medical doctor.
