As the final notes play at a vibrant Chicago nightclub where they have captivated audiences, charismatic singer Rusty Wells and his band are gearing up for their much-anticipated spring break escapade in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida. However, their dreams of fun and relaxation are abruptly interrupted by Big Frank ([Harold J. Stone]), the club’s owner, who insists they extend their engagement at his venue, much to the band’s discontent.
In an interesting twist, Big Frank’s daughter Valerie, a spirited college student, also intends to vacation in Lauderdale with her friends, stirring concern in her father’s mind about potential mishaps. Sensing a chance to turn their predicament around, Rusty proposes that Big Frank employ them to monitor Valerie’s activities, ensuring she remains safe and sound. This prompts Rusty and the band to take on the unusual role of chaperones in Lauderdale, all while trying to keep the amorous Italian exchange student Romano ([Fabrizio Mioni]) at a respectful distance.
In the midst of this comedic chaos, Rusty must also navigate his complex relationship with Deena ([Mary Ann Mobley]), a fun-loving date who grows increasingly frustrated with the situation. As Rusty dedicates himself to protecting Valerie, a spark of romance ignites between them, leading to a serenade beneath the stars, where he tenderly sings > “Puppet on a String” as he walks her back to her motel room. However, things take a tumultuous turn when Valerie learns about Big Frank’s financial arrangement with Rusty, which leaves her feeling betrayed and heartbroken. In her anger, she seeks refuge at a local nightclub, resulting in a drunken escapade that escalates into a riot, ultimately landing them all behind bars.
When Big Frank arrives in Lauderdale to rescue Valerie from her embarrassing ordeal, his initial fury towards Rusty quickly dissipates upon realizing the sincerity of Valerie’s feelings for him. This newfound understanding allows the three of them to work towards mending their relationships, ultimately giving Rusty and Valerie the chance to rekindle their blossoming romance amidst the chaos of their spring break adventure.
