Saravanavelu, known as Velu, is a state-level Kabaddi player living in Chennai with his family. His father, Sivasubramaniam, a stern police officer, constantly rebukes him for neglecting his education in favor of Kabaddi, while Velu’s mother Janaki dotes on him. Velu’s younger sister Bhuvana is sharp and inquisitive, and she often drags him into trouble with their father, even as she adores him. One day, Velu is sent to his relative’s wedding in Trichy, but he secretly skips it to play a Kabaddi match in Madurai for his team Ghilli. The choice reveals Velu’s loyalty to his sport and his readiness to follow his own path, even when it stirs trouble at home.
Meanwhile, in Madurai, the charismatic gang leader Muthupandi desires to marry Dhanalakshmi, and when she resists, he kills her older brother and then attempts to silence others who stand in his way. Dhanalakshmi’s father grows terrified of Muthupandi’s growing influence and urges his daughter to flee Madurai, sending her to live with her uncle in the United States with money and university certificates for her future. But as she tries to escape, Muthupandi catches up with her. Velu happens to spot Dhanalakshmi while preparing for a Kabaddi match in Madurai and steps in, thrashing Muthupandi and ferrying her to Chennai.
Velu hides Dhanalakshmi in his room, keeping her presence a secret from his family. He also arranges a passport and flight to get her to the United States, while she gradually falls for him. When Velu’s father uncovers the truth, Velu and Dhanalakshmi escape again and seek refuge in a lighthouse. They then rush to the airport to catch a flight before the National League final against Punjab, hoping to secure a future together.
Back home, Sivasubramaniam is furious that Velu remains involved in the Kabaddi match despite being a wanted man, but he agrees to postpone the arrest until after the final, at the request of Velu’s sister Bhuvana. Velu realizes he has fallen in love with Dhanalakshmi, and the sight of her in the stadium reignites his focus, lifting his performance and helping his team win the championship for Ghilli.
After the victory, Velu is confronted by his father, and the tension explodes when Muthupandi, provoked by Dhanalakshmi to prove his worth, steps in. The two clash, Velu regains his strength to defeat Muthupandi, who then attempts to kill him with an aruval. In the ensuing struggle, a floodlight, broken during the fight, touches the aruval and electrocuts Muthupandi to death, bringing the whirlwind of events to a brutal but definitive end. Velu and Dhanalakshmi share a quiet moment of relief and mutual resolve as the city moves forward.
