What Happens in Gayab: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Gayab (2004) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Vishnu Prasad is an unappreciated nerd whose home life is marked by a nagging Vishnu's Mother and a distant Vishnu's Father. He harbors a quiet crush on his neighbor Mohini, but she already has a boyfriend, Sameer. When Vishnu spots Mohini in a cafe with Sameer, a tense moment unfolds: Mohini’s eyes meet his, he shyly winks, and Sameer lashes out, leaving Vishnu in tears. He wanders to a lonely beach to cope with the sting of rejection, feeling the weight of his loneliness.

In a moment of despair, Vishnu prays to a statue to disappear from the world, and to his astonishment, the wish appears to be granted: he becomes genuinely invisible. Initially thrilled, he uses the power to spy on Mohini and to complicate her relationship with Sameer. He quickly learns a crucial limit: only the clothes he wore on the day of the boon vanish with him; wearing anything else would reveal his hidden body. He finds his white shirt, which is also invisible, and puts it on before he gets exposed, adjusting to this bizarre new reality.

Back at home, Vishnu muses over his secret with his father and tries to keep the peace at home. He plays the role of an invisible “ghost” to teach his mother a lesson, and her fear escalates when she mistakes the spectral presence for the ghost of her late father-in-law, causing her to faint. Believing that money might win Mohini’s affection, Vishnu turns to a drastic measure and robs a bank, bringing cash to Mohini. But Mohini is shocked and terrified by the deed and makes it clear that she loves Sameer and wants nothing to do with Vishnu.

Alone and heartbroken, Vishnu drinks and roams the streets as the media spins sensational stories about an “invisible force” behind the bank robbery. The police tighten the net, painting Vishnu’s invisible escapades as a national threat. Sameer and Mohini attempt to go into hiding, but they remain pursued, and Vishnu issues a stark warning to the authorities: bring Mohini to him, or he will wreak havoc across the city.

The police eventually locate Mohini and plead with her to help capture Vishnu before he becomes an even greater danger. Mohini agrees and goes to an abandoned building to meet Vishnu, distracting him as the cops close in. In a quiet moment, Vishnu confesses that he has been wrong all along and that his love does not grant him control over her life. Moved by his honesty, Mohini signals him to run as the authorities move in. Vishnu dashes toward a river and dives in, the police firing as his clothes surface, though his body remains unfound.

Days pass, and Mohini and Sameer discover Vishnu alive on the riverbank—now naked after his escape. He apologizes for his actions and decides to attempt a normal life. He is arrested and serves a short stint in jail before he is released. Months later, Vishnu—now clothed in different outfits—becomes a national figure, celebrated for helping the police solve cases while continuing to live an invisible life, quietly recognized as a unique kind of hero.
