Nick Powell, portrayed by Justin Chatwin, appears to lead a seemingly perfect life as a high school student, but underneath, he’s grappling with deep teen angst. Annie Newton, played by Margarita Levieva, is a troubled teen who channels her rage towards Nick. After a brutal encounter leaves Nick near death, his spirit embarks on a desperate quest to locate his own body before it succumbs completely to the injuries inflicted upon him. The challenge is immense, especially since he is now invisible to the living.

The story unfolds with Nick’s mother, Marcia Gay Harden, giving a heartfelt toast to her son during a large family gathering. She presents him with a sentimental gift inscribed with the words, “To Nick, from Mom, make me proud.” However, this poignant moment is shadowed by Nick’s carefree nature as he casually tears the center out of a chocolate cake and heads to the garage with it in hand. The next morning, he awakens to a cheerful breakfast arranged in a smiley face by his mother, who, while well-meaning, keeps pushing him toward college despite Nick’s dream of taking a writer’s course in London.

At school, Nick interacts with his classmate Pete Egan, played by Chris Marquette, and delivers a captivating French essay. However, things take a dark turn when Annie leads a group to attack Pete in a bathroom over a theft accusation. The ensuing chaos results in Nick confronting Annie, who brutalizes him in the cafeteria before both are disciplined.

Nick confides in Pete about his bottled emotions from the death of his father when he was just 13. Meanwhile, Annie’s destructive relationship with her boyfriend Marcus Bohem, played by Alex O’Loughlin, culminates in a robbery where she smashes a jewelry store window to steal a necklace. Their activities lead to a police investigation when Annie’s locker is searched at school. Later that evening, as Nick prepares for a party at his house, unbeknownst to him, Annie’s gang is plotting against him.

During the party, Nick meets a girl and contemplates leaving for London, but the night takes a dark turn when Annie and her crew find him. They brutally attack Nick, leaving him to drown in a storm drain after he is knocked unconscious. Panic ensues among his attackers when they realize they have left him for dead. Meanwhile, Annie’s desperate need for an alibi leads to tension with Marcus, who tries to deflect blame from himself.

As Nick’s spirit wanders, he soon understands that he is invisible and must communicate with the living to save himself. The efforts of Detective Kate Tunney and Detective Brian Larson intensify as they investigate Nick’s disappearance. Nick’s mother, grieving and desperate, finds solace in reading his poetry journal.

While searching for Nick, Annie experiences a moment of reflection, leading her to confront the choices she has made. She grapples with her guilt and the consequences of her actions, even threatening Marcus during a heated confrontation, resulting in a tragic showdown.

In a vein of supernatural tension, Nick ultimately guides Annie toward redemption despite the chaos around them. Just as Nick moves closer to his fate, danger looms for his friend Pete, who is on the brink of a tragic decision.

As the narrative unfolds, Nick’s spirit finally reunites with his body just in time for rescue, thanks to Annie’s push to find him. In a harrowing finale, they share a moment that connects them beyond the realms of life and death, culminating in a symbolic gesture of sending a message to Annie through a plane, inscribed with a heartfelt note – “Hey Annie”.

This engaging tale touches on themes of redemption, the struggles of youth, and the unbreakable connections that defy mortality.
