On his birthday, middle-aged Henry Perkins rides the underground with anticipation for his birthday dinner with friends. He is excited to return home to Fulham where he and his wife Jean have planned a gathering.

While on the tube, Henry inadvertently picks up a wrong suitcase, believing it to be his. Upon getting off at Fulham Broadway, he discovers the mistake and finds £735,000 in cash inside, which he realizes must be linked to criminal activities.

Henry goes to a nearby pub where he counts the money several times in a booth, feeling both excited and anxious about his find. Unbeknownst to him, he is being watched by Davenport, a bent cop who misinterprets Henry's intentions.

Realizing the implications of his discovery, Henry tells Jean they need to leave for Barcelona immediately. He aims to escape his mundane life and avoid the consequences of the money's origin before obtaining his identity back.

Davenport arrives at Henry's home, wanting to speak to him. Henry mistakenly assumes this is about the money, escalating the confusion with introductions involving Vic and Betty, who are addressed as relatives heading to Australia.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nasty, the original owner of the briefcase, meets a dark fate at the hands of Mr. Big, a criminal associate. He is killed and disposed of in the Thames with the briefcase, which Henry unknowingly took.

Mr. Big starts calling the Perkins' home in search of his briefcase. Only Bill, the taxi driver, answers and, misunderstanding the situation, reveals the Perkins' address, setting off a chain reaction of events.

A police officer named Slater arrives to inform Jean that her husband is presumed dead, leading to further misunderstanding as Henry pretends to be his brother, Freddy, to protect his identity. The situation grows increasingly chaotic.

As the situation unfolds, Jean succumbs to the stress and confusion, drinking heavily despite her teetotaler past. This leads to her becoming visibly drunk and contributes to the chaotic environment at home.

Davenport reveals his true colors as a corrupt officer, demanding a cut of the money for silence. He is introduced falsely to Slater as another brother, Archie, adding to the baffling web of deception.

Despite all the mix-ups, the group makes plans to escape to Barcelona, with Davenport joining as a bodyguard and Bill as their gardener, as everyone believes they can put the chaos behind them and start anew.

Mr. Big finally appears at the Perkins' home, having sustained injuries from a car accident involving Bill and Slater. This leads to a tense situation where a confrontation erupts as he demands his briefcase back.

A chaotic shootout ensues at the Perkins' home as they struggle to subdue Mr. Big. All parties involved scramble to avoid physical harm while resolving the predicaments surrounding the briefcase.

Once the dust settles, Henry confesses everything to Slater, including the mistaken identities and the actual occurrences leading up to the chaos. This moment brings clarity amid the confusion.

As the chaos concludes and Mr. Big is taken away by the police, Henry tries to resume a normal life, opting to have his delayed birthday dinner. Bill then surprises everyone by revealing he secured the money in a suitcase.
