In Philadelphia, a cart carrying a staggering $1.2 million in $100 bills tumbles from an armored van as it leaves the Federal Reserve Bank, sparking a dangerous, spiraling chase into a world of risk and moral ambiguity. Joey Coyle [John Cusack], a struggling longshoreman, discovers the money and faces a pivotal choice: do you walk away or seize the windfall and gamble with fate? He decides to keep it, and his plan quickly sets off a cascade of consequences that ripple through his life and the city around him.

He shares the discovery with his friend Kenny Kozlowski [Michael Rapaport], who is driving his father’s car, but Kenny refuses to get drawn into the crime, leaving Joey to navigate the fallout on his own. Back home, Joey hides a large portion of the money in his closet, trying to keep it secret from his mother and his siblings — Billy Coyle [James Gandolfini], and Eleanor Coyle [Elizabeth Bracco] — as well as his niece Katie Coyle [Ashleigh Dejon]. The tense family dynamic adds another layer of pressure as they contemplate what to do with the windfall and the danger it brings.

Detective Pat Laurenzi [Michael Madsen] is assigned to the case and quickly spots the faulty latch on the van as the root cause of the money’s disappearance. News reports generate intense interest and speculation among local residents, turning the city into a spotlight of rumor and curiosity.

Joey reconnects with Monica Russo [Debi Mazar], his former girlfriend and an investment banker, seeking advice on how to deposit a huge sum without attracting tax authorities. Monica, initially skeptical, begins to see the reality of his find and the opportunity it represents, even as she weighs the consequences. To finance his ambition, Joey turns to Dino Palladino [Benicio Del Toro], a bookmaker, who enlists Vincente Goldoni [Maury Chaykin] to help launder the money, drawing the pair into a dangerous laundering scheme that is as complicated as it is risky.

Meanwhile, Laurenzi interviews locals and a homeless boy who claims to have seen someone take the money, identifying the make and model of Kenny’s father’s car and intensifying the investigation. At a bar where Joey mingles with patrons, suspicions rise as Laurenzi questions people, and Joey shoots to protect his secret by driving Kenny’s car into a river to hide the evidence.

The money is hidden in Monica’s office, and Joey returns to Goldoni with a gun to reclaim the first batch, discovering that the money has been skimmed into nickels and quarters — a dizzying twist that complicates every step of his plan. After retrieving the car from the river, Laurenzi’s line of questioning reaches Kenny, whose father furiously disciplines him, revealing the fragile trust within Joey’s circle and confirming the link between the money and real people.

A televised report identifies Joey as the thief, and the bar’s regulars rally around him, treating him as a local hero who protected their own, much to Billy’s frustration. Dino, attempting to bury the crime, arranges to return the laundered money to avoid additional liability, complicating Joey’s already precarious position. Monica arrives with the remaining cash and airline tickets, and the two share a hotel night where Monica bleaches Joey’s hair and obsessively counts the cash, highlighting how the money has begun to Change their lives.

At the airport, the chase intensifies as Laurenzi closes in, and Joey and Monica face a logistical hurdle: the suitcase of cash is too large to carry aboard. They improvise with a purchase of pantyhose to conceal the money, transferring it into a small duffel bag in a restroom, trying to outrun the legal net and the city’s curiosity.

As they approach boarding, Laurenzi raises his weapon and a tense standoff ensues. Joey flees, but they are quickly surrounded by police and arrested, ending their bid for a fresh start. The film’s closing epilogue reveals that the armored car company recovered all but about $196,000 of the stolen money. Joey is charged with theft, conspiracy, and receiving stolen property, yet is acquitted on all counts by reason of temporary insanity, leaving a controversial note on accountability, luck, and the gray areas between crime and fate.
