Anna’s frustration is compounded by her mother’s upcoming wedding to her boyfriend, Mark Harmon, and the lingering grief from her father’s death three years prior. Adding to her woes is Anna’s rival, Stacey Hinkhouse, who torments her at school and misleads Tess into believing they are still best friends.

During a family outing to a Chinese restaurant, tensions flare between Anna and Tess over the conflicting schedules of Anna’s band audition and Tess’s wedding rehearsal. In an unexpected twist, a fortune cookie incident causes an earthquake felt only by them, leading to an extraordinary body swap. The next morning, they wake up in each other’s bodies, bewildered and desperate to return to normalcy.

As Anna navigates life in her mother’s role, she learns that her English teacher, Mr. Bates, is unjustly grading her. Tess, now in Anna’s body, faces challenges at school, including dealing with Stacey’s antics and confronting Mr. Bates about his unfair treatment. In a moment of empowerment, Tess humiliates Mr. Bates in front of Anna’s peers to protect her daughter.

The two embark on a mission to swap back by following the fortunes from their cookies.
