Terri Venessi [Mary Kate Schellhardt] is a standout student known as the “deli girl” in a close-knit, working-class town, and she often finds herself at odds with Karen Ridgeway [Hillary Tuck], the school’s confident cheer captain. Terri’s life is shaped by her close bond with her mother Grace [Valerie Harper], a widow who keeps a steady hand in the home, while Karen belongs to a family led by Millie Ridgeway [Shelley Fabares], a woman who balances social ambitions with the day-to-day needs of her own family. The two households have carried a long-standing rivalry since friends became rivals, decades ago, setting the stage for a clash that goes beyond school hallways.
A prank war between the girls spirals out of control when a revenge-fueled stink bomb in Karen’s locker forces the entire school to evacuate for two tense days. In the principal’s office, Officer Patricia Smith lays out a surprising remedy: the girls—and along with them, their mothers—should switch lives for a while so each can walk in the other’s shoes and see the consequences of their habits. Under the shadow of possible expulsion, both families agree to participate, recognizing that their long-festering tensions might finally ease through this unusual experiment.
Karen Ridgeway [Hillary Tuck] comes from a more affluent home where her parents are often away, which leaves room for responsibility to land on her teenage shoulders. With Terri Venessi [Mary Kate Schellhardt] taking on the duties of caring for her younger sister Tiffany, Karen experiences first-hand what it feels like to shoulder that kind of domestic load without much preparation. As Terri navigates Karen’s world, a surprising spark appears with Karen’s brother David Ridgeway [Andrew Kavovit], especially after Karen gives Terri a transformative makeover that reveals a side of Terri she hadn’t seen before. The new dynamic challenges Karen’s usual self-confidence, and she begins to see the pressure her own mother places on appearances and status.
At Terri’s home, Karen’s arrival brings energy to a family that runs a busy Italian deli, led by Papa Tognetti [Sid Caesar] and Grace [Valerie Harper]. Terri’s own family is blue-collar and direct, with practical values that contrast with Karen’s social circle. Karen’s friends—who once teased Terri—start to reflect Terri’s influence, and Karen finds it refreshing to befriend people who aren’t driven by appearances. The shift also exposes Karen to the more hands-on, involved motherhood of Grace, highlighting a contrast with her own mother’s sometimes self-absorbed tendencies. As time passes, Karen begins to see how much her mother’s ambitions shape her own life, and she starts to reconsider what truly matters.
Meanwhile, Millie Ridgeway experiences a parallel awakening. She and Grace gain perspective on the enduring friendship they once shared and realize that their current rivalries stem from past hurts that can be healed. The old resentments soften as both mothers recognize that family and connection should come before status or social games. Grandpa Tognetti’s presence lingers in the background, and for a moment, the family worries when he goes missing during the swap; it turns out he’s simply moved to a retirement village, a misdirection that heightens the emotional stakes while underscoring the broader theme: life’s simple truths often lie in ordinary acts of care.
As the swap unfolds, Terri and Karen discover new facets of themselves and each other. Terri learns to stand up for what she believes in within Karen’s world, while Karen experiences personal growth that extends beyond social performance. The mothers come to recognize the strength of their own families and the value of genuine connection over outward appearances. And the swapped lives reveal that both families have been missing something essential: a willingness to slow down, listen, and invest in one another.
The culmination takes place at the school Prom, where Terri and David Ridgeway [Andrew Kavovit] attend together, while Karen and Chad Elkins [Hunter Garner] are crowned Prom Queen and King. The night also exposes attempts to rig the election, which are promptly called out and corrected, reinforcing themes of honesty and mutual respect. By the end, Terri and Karen have formed a true friendship, built on mutual understanding and shared experiences, while Grace and Millie repair their long-standing rift. The experience leaves everyone with a clearer sense of what truly matters: family, loyalty, and the courage to grow beyond old feuds.
