Adele Tasca is present when her husband is killed by a letter bomb in New York City. The shocking murder fuels her suspicions that his former employer, the reclusive billionaire Karl Stegner, orchestrated the attack. She learns that her husband, a chemist, had uncovered that Stegner's company produced a contaminated drug linked to cancer, a truth the government is eager to prosecute Stegner for.

She concludes that Stegner, the man who hides behind a mask of wealth, is behind the assassination. She learns about the contaminated drug that caused cancers and the government's interest in pressing charges against Stegner.
