Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry (2017) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Fiore is thrown into chaos when the cunning minister of state, Zash Caine, absconds with the Dragon Cry, an ancient staff unearthed from the legendary dragon graveyard located beneath the capital city of Crocus. In a desperate bid to reclaim this potent artifact, the royal family turns to Natsu Dragneel and his fellow wizards from the Fairy Tail guild. This staff possesses incredible magical power, one that has the potential to obliterate the entire kingdom.

The team sets out to track down Zash, who has travelled to Stella, where King Animus harbors plans to utilize the staff for a dire ritual. However, as fate would have it, Natsu's unintentional contact with the staff provides Zash with an advantage, leading to the capture of Natsu’s team by both Zash and the kingdom's elite military unit, the Three Stars. They manage to escape with the help of Zash's hesitant accomplice, Sonya, an aide to King Animus and his childhood friend.

Sonya warns the Fairy Tail guild to abandon their quest, explaining that Animus's ritual holds the key to averting a catastrophe that could engulf the kingdom in disaster. Yet, Natsu, sensing the malevolent intent of dragons slain by Acnologia within the staff, remains resolute in his mission.

As they regroup and return to Stella, Natsu and his companions confront the Three Stars and ultimately reclaim the staff. In a moment of revelation, when Sonya touches the Dragon Cry, she affirms Natsu's fears regarding its dark essence. Moments later, Natsu discovers that Animus has been manipulating Sonya from within, appearing as a dragon who had imprisoned himself in her body to escape death.

With Zash intent on revenge against Fiore for his exile, he seizes the staff for his own malevolent purposes, activating an army of synthetic soldiers against Fairy Tail. However, it's Zash who meets a grim fate at the hands of the very magic he sought to wield.

During a fierce struggle for the Dragon Cry, Animus manages to severely injure Natsu while regaining his lost powers by absorbing the staff's magic. But rather than succumbing, Natsu, now part-dragon after the ordeal, unleashes a ferocious assault on Animus, who recognizes him as E.N.D., the "destroyer of all." Natsu ultimately prevails, yet is left shaken by his transformation. Thankfully, he finds solace in the embrace of Lucy Heartfilia.

In a climactic resolution, Sonya shatters the Dragon Cry, dismantling the army of soldiers and allowing Animus to die peacefully. The shattered remnants of the staff reveal their true identity as a ribbon belonging to Sonya, which dances away with the wind.

In the post-credits scene, the ribbon catches the attention of Acnologia, who recalls a pivotal moment when he annihilated a group of dragons, gravely injuring Animus during his childhood for daring to protect Sonya. No longer holding any compassion for humanity, Acnologia obliterates the ribbon. Meanwhile, Zeref observes this dark turn of events from a distance, alongside Brandish μ and Invel Yura, foreshadowing an imminent confrontation with Natsu.

Q1

Why does Natsu's contact with the Dragon Cry give Zash an advantage?

A.

When Natsu touches the Dragon Cry, he inadvertently triggers its magical defenses. The staff is attuned to magical energy, and Natsu's own magic signature allows Zash to track and locate the team. This contact provides Zash with the opportunity to coordinate with the Three Stars and set up the ambush that captures Natsu's entire team.

The staff was buried in a dragon graveyard, suggesting it retains ancient magical properties that respond to wizard magic.

Q2

What is Animus's ritual and why does Sonya support it?

A.

Animus planned to use the Dragon Cry's magic to perform a ritual that would prevent a catastrophe threatening the kingdom. Sonya, as his childhood friend, believed the ritual was necessary to save Stella from destruction. However, the ritual required the staff's power, which is derived from the souls of dragons slain by Acnologia, making it dangerous and corrupt.

Sonya warns Fairy Tail that the ritual could prevent a greater disaster, showing her genuine concern for the kingdom.

Q3

How is Animus trapped in Sonya's body?

A.

Animus is a dragon who imprisoned himself inside Sonya's body to escape death. This explains why he appears as a dragon manipulating Sonya from within. By possessing her body, Animus survived when he should have died, allowing him to later attempt his scheme with the Dragon Cry.

The revelation comes when Sonya touches the staff and confirms its dark essence, suggesting a deeper connection between her and the artifact.

Q4

What is E.N.D. and why is Natsu called the destroyer?

A.

E.N.D. stands for Etherious Natsu Dragneel, a demonic creation from the Book of E.N.D. that Zeref wrote. During his transformation when fighting Animus, Natsu's demonic nature is exposed, leading Animus to recognize him as E.N.D., the legendary destroyer. This is a plot element connecting Natsu to his darker origins.

Natsu's transformation during the battle reveals draconic features, hinting at his true nature as a demon slayer.

Q5

Why does Sonya shatter the Dragon Cry and what was it really?

A.

Sonya shatters the Dragon Cry to destroy the army of synthetic soldiers that Zash created and to free Animus, allowing him to die peacefully. The staff's true identity is revealed to be a ribbon belonging to Sonya, her childhood keepsake that was transformed into the powerful artifact. This explains why only she could destroy it.

The ribbon dances away with the wind after the staff shatters, symbolizing Sonya's connection to the artifact.

Q6

Why does Zash die from the Dragon Cry magic he tried to use?

A.

Zash attempts to use the Dragon Cry's power for revenge against Fiore, but the staff's magic proves too overwhelming for a human to control. The magic backfires, killing Zash with the very power he sought to wield. This serves as a cautionary tale about greed and the dangers of using corrupt magical artifacts.

Earlier in the film, the staff's dark nature is emphasized through references to the dragons slain by Acnologia.

Q7

What is the connection between Acnologia and the Dragon Cry?

A.

The Dragon Cry contains the remains and souls of dragons slain by Acnologia during his campaign of destruction. This is why Natsu senses malevolent intent from the staff, the dragons within it were killed by Acnologia, and their negative energy fuels the artifact's power. In the post-credits, Acnologia destroys the ribbon remnant, recalling when he originally injured Animus for protecting Sonya.

Q8

Why can only Sonya destroy the Dragon Cry?

A.

The Dragon Cry is fundamentally tied to Sonya because it was originally her ribbon, her personal keepsake transformed by magical means into the powerful staff. This personal connection grants Sonya the unique ability to shatter the artifact. Her sacrifice destroys both the staff and the synthetic army Animus created.

The ribbon is shown floating away after the staff breaks, symbolizing its true identity as Sonya's possession.

Q9

Why does Natsu become part-dragon during the final battle?

A.

When Animus injures Natsu and absorbs the Dragon Cry's magic, Natsu is exposed to the dragon energy within the staff. This causes him to transform partially into a dragon, unleashing his dormant draconic powers. This transformation allows him to overpower Animus but leaves him shaken by the darkness within himself.

Natsu's constant exposure to dragon-related magic throughout the film builds toward this transformation.

What does Zeref's appearance in the post-credits scene mean?

A.

Zeref appears alongside Brandish μ and Invel Yura, watching Acnologia destroy the ribbon. This foreshadows an imminent confrontation between Zeref and Natsu, setting up future conflict in the series. Zeref, as the creator of E.N.D., has a personal stake in Natsu's fate.
