Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming

Goten's cries in the village trigger Broly's awakening because the sound resembles the crying of Goku (Kakarot) as an infant. Broly has a deep-seated hatred for Goku stemming from their childhood on Planet Vegeta, where Goku's constant crying irritated him. When Goten's cries reach Broly's dormant state, they activate his rage and wake him from his seven-year coma.

Broly survived the lava pit because of his Legendary Super Saiyan form, which grants him immense physical power and durability far beyond a typical Saiyan. While Gohan believed luring Broly into the lava would defeat him, the Legendary transformation allows Broly to withstand extreme heat and physical trauma. He emerges from the lava almost immediately with renewed fury, catching Gohan off guard.

The Dragon Balls respond to Goten and Trunks' desperate wish for their father Goku to help them. The boys had collected six of the seven Dragon Balls during their quest, and their sincere desire for their father's assistance summons Goku from Other World. This is the first time in the series that the Dragon Balls are used to summon someone from the afterlife rather than for a traditional wish.

Broly's Legendary Super Saiyan is an extremely rare transformation that only occurs in individuals with an exceptionally high latent power level. Unlike regular Super Saiyan, this form gives Broly greenish hair, a more muscular build, and fighting capabilities that far exceed a typical Super Saiyan 2. Gohan's Super Saiyan 2 form is completely outmatched, requiring the combined effort of multiple fighters.

The movie establishes Broly as 'the Legendary Super Saiyan' from the opening prologue.

Broly's obsession with Goku stems from their infancy on Planet Vegeta. As babies, Goku (then known as Kakarot) would cry constantly, which irritated the young Broly who was already feared for his overwhelming power. This childhood irritation evolved into an intense hatred. Even after seven years in a coma, Broly retains this obsession, repeating 'Kakarot' as he drifts through space.

The Father-Sons Kamehameha is a combined energy attack where Goku, Goten, and Trunks synchronize their ki and fire a unified Kamehameha wave. Goku provides the base power while Goten and Trunks add their energy on top, creating a blast stronger than any of them could produce alone. Even this combined attack initially fails to push Broly back until Trunks uses a separate blast to knock Broly off balance, allowing the Kamehameha to send him into space.

After Broly emerges from his pod and lets out a furious roar in his Super Saiyan form, he reverts to his Base form almost immediately. This happens because the initial transformation was a reflexive response to his rage upon regaining consciousness. Without an immediate target for his hatred (Goku), Broly has no reason to maintain the Super Saiyan form, and he slips into unconsciousness, later freezing in ice within the crater.

Gohan cannot defeat Broly alone because the Legendary Super Saiyan form far surpasses Super Saiyan 2 in raw power. While Gohan is one of the strongest warriors at this point in the series, Broly's Legendary transformation represents a tier of power that single fighters cannot match. Even after Gohan lures Broly into the lava pit and exhausts himself, Broly returns unharmed and overpowers Gohan repeatedly until the combined family attack arrives.

Broly is blast into space by the combined Father-Sons Kamehameha and hurtles toward the Sun. The extreme heat and energy of the Sun's corona completely destroy Broly's body, killing him. This is the second time Broly has been defeated by the Saiyan family; the first was in the previous film where Goku supposedly killed him, though this film reveals he survived long enough to crash on Earth.

Gohan and Goten question whether Goku was truly there because his appearance was so brief and sudden that it felt surreal. Goku appeared through the Dragon Ball wish, fought alongside them for only a moment, and then vanished back to Other World. The brief, almost dreamlike nature of his arrival leaves them uncertain about whether it actually happened, though they ultimately feel grateful for his help regardless.
