Ezra

Following the death of the last Malabar Jew in Cochin, an antique seller loots the house. Among the stolen items is a box bearing Jewish inscriptions. At night, an unseen force from the box mauls and kills a worker in the shop. ACP Shafeer Ahammed is assigned to the case but has no lead.

Ranjan Mathew, a nuclear waste management specialist, is transferred from Mumbai to Kochi with his wife Priya Raghuram. Priya, fluent in both Marathi and Malayali, struggles to adjust to the new environment. During a retail therapy session, she buys the strange box, and curiosity soon turns to unease as strange occurrences begin.

After settling in, Priya opens the enigmatic box, and a wave of inexplicable phenomena follows. The disturbances start subtly at first and escalate in intensity. In response, Ranjan invites Father Samuel to visit their home for guidance.

Father Samuel examines the box and confirms that it is a Dybbuk box capable of housing a malevolent spirit. He warns that interaction with such a box can invite a dangerous possession. His revelation marks the first clear link between the box and supernatural danger in Kochi.

Ranjan travels to Mumbai to consult Rabbi David Benyamin, who explains that a Dybbuk possesses unstable individuals or children, and that the one who exorcises it becomes its worst enemy. The ominous warning is followed by the rabbi’s sudden death the next day, deepening the mystery surrounding the box.

Ranjan learns Priya is pregnant and fears the baby will be possessed by the Dybbuk. He reaches out to Rabbi Benyamin’s son, Marques, for assistance, hoping to avert the danger looming over their child. Marques begins preparations to travel to Kochi to confront the entity.

Marques arrives in Kochi and discovers that the Dybbuk is linked to a name written on the box: Abraham Ezra. To deepen their understanding, they contact Joshua Yehudi, a former associate of Rabbi Benyamin. Yehudi provides a book that recounts the story of Abraham Ezra in 1941 Thiru-Kochi.

In a flashback set in Thiru-Kochi, Abraham Ezra, a rich Jewish boy, falls in love with Rosy, a poor Christian girl. Rosy becomes pregnant, but Ezra’s father Yakoob Ezra forbids the union, believing their differences doom the relationship. Ezra writes a letter urging Rosy to end the affair, and she dies of heartbreak.

Rosy’s death sparks a confrontation where Rosy’s father and villagers clash with Ezra and Yakoob. In the ensuing violence, Rosy’s father is killed and Ezra is left brain-dead. Enraged, Yakoob uses black magic to trap Ezra’s soul in a Dybbuk box, burying a wooden mannequin in Ezra’s place and dumping Ezra’s body at sea; the box eventually migrates to present-day Kochi.

Marques and Samuel involve Shafeer in the investigation. After exhuming Ezra’s grave and uncovering the buried mannequin, they confirm that the ancient tale of Abraham Ezra has a basis in fact. The box’s history appears to be more than superstition, linking past tragedy to present danger.

As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the Dybbuk has chosen Ranjan as its vessel. The spirit recognizes his unique vulnerability as an orphan with mental stress and leverages his nuclear-waste work to plot the city’s destruction. The danger shifts from Priya to Ranjan.

Marques performs Jewish exorcism rituals to expel the Dybbuk from Ranjan, sending the spirit back into the box. Together with Shafeer, he drowns the box in the ocean, repeating the fate of Ezra’s body; the immediate threat to Kochi is contained for now.

Priya gives birth to a healthy baby, and she and Ranjan share the good news with Marques. The family contemplates the future now that the immediate danger has passed. The mood shifts from dread to relief as a new life begins.

In a mid-credits scene, two young men discover the opened Dybbuk box along the seashore and carry it away, planning to open it. The box’s ominous flicker hints that danger may not be over. The last image leaves a chill of uncertainty for Kochi’s future.
