Ezra

Ezra is primarily set in Kochi (also called Cochin), a historic port city on the Kerala coast known for its Jewish heritage and multicultural trade history. The story also involves Mumbai as a starting point for the main characters, and Thiru-Kochi as the location for the 1941 flashback backstory.

A Dybbuk is a malevolent spirit in Jewish folklore, traditionally a restless soul of a deceased person that possesses the living. In Ezra, the Dybbuk is bound within a box and targets vulnerable individuals, exploiting their emotional and psychological weaknesses.

Abraham Ezra is the spirit bound to the Dybbuk box in the film. His backstory involves a forbidden romance with Rosy, a Christian girl, in 1941 Thiru-Kochi. After their relationship was thwarted and tragedy struck, his father Yakoob Ezra placed his soul into the box through black magic, creating the haunted artifact.

Priya is Ranjan Mathew's wife, a Marathi-Malayali woman who relocates to Kochi with him. During a shopping trip, she purchases the mysterious box that eventually opens and unleashes the paranormal events. Her role acts as the catalyst for the supernatural conflict that follows.

Ranjan Mathew is a nuclear waste management specialist who moves from Mumbai to Kochi with his wife Priya. He is a rational, science-oriented person whose vulnerability and high-stress occupation make him a target for the Dybbuk. His possession becomes the central conflict driving the exorcism effort.

The Dybbuk box originates from 1941 Thiru-Kochi, where Yakoob Ezra created it through black magic to trap his son's soul after Ezra's death. The box was later disposed of but eventually resurfaced, passing through various hands before being purchased by Priya in modern-day Kochi.
