Karen, portrayed by Sally Field, and Mack McCann, played by Ed Harris, are a content and loving couple residing in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, where they raise two daughters: 17-year-old Julie from Karen’s previous marriage and her six-year-old sister, Megan. However, their world is shattered one fateful afternoon while Karen is out shopping; she overhears a harrowing phone call revealing that Julie has succumbed to a brutal rape and murder during a home invasion, a trauma that will haunt the family forever. Detective Joe Denillo steps in, assuring the devastated McCann family that there is sufficient DNA evidence to bring the perpetrator to justice, and he encourages Karen to seek support through counseling.

In her quest for healing, Karen discovers a support group where she connects with others who are navigating similar excruciating losses. Among these are Albert and Regina Gratz, who share their own heartbreaking story, and the insightful moderator, Sidney Hughes. During one poignant meeting, Karen hears Albert mention a detail that seems to trouble Regina, adding layers of intrigue and tension to the atmosphere of shared grief and pain. Meanwhile, DNA testing leads them to the shocking realization that the vile assailant is none other than Robert Doob, portrayed by Kiefer Sutherland, a delivery driver with a checkered past. However, their initial hope is swiftly crushed when the judge dismisses the case due to a legal technicality — the defense was denied a crucial sample from the prosecution. Karen and Mack’s despair deepens as they watch Doob, oddly confident, stroll out of the courthouse.

In the aftermath, Karen is unable to shake off her obsession with Doob, leading her to stalk him and document his movements meticulously. Her desperation rises as she attempts to warn a female customer of his dangerous nature, but a language barrier thwarts her intentions. In a disturbing turn of events, Karen learns from Charlayne Woodard, another member of the support group, that the killer of Regina’s son has recently met his end in a drive-by shooting — a grim reflection of the cycle of violence they all seek to escape.

Forced to confront her unresolved grief, Karen realizes that her fixation on revenge is robbing her of precious moments with her remaining daughter, Megan. However, as she grapples with her mental state, Doob begins to stalk her, escalating to threatening her daughter if she does not cease her pursuit. Caught in a whirlwind of emotions, Karen finds herself turning to Sidney, who reveals his knowledge of a vigilante plot among the support group members. He encourages her to embrace their “eye for an eye” philosophy, promising to provide her the resources necessary for carrying out her revenge, which includes training her for the act.

With newfound determination, Karen embarks on a path of empowerment, engaging in self-defense classes that breathe life back into her relationship with Mack and allowing her to refocus her attention on Megan. However, the delicate balance shifts dramatically when she discovers that Angel, another support group member, is an undercover FBI agent plotting to dismantle the vigilante activity. Torn between her moral compass and her thirst for vengeance, Karen’s resolve wavers — but the brutal reality of Doob’s evasion of justice pushes her back toward a dark decision when she learns of yet another murder linked to him.

Setting an elaborate trap for Doob, Karen waits until Mack and Megan have left town to spring her plan. She vandalizes Doob’s apartment, baiting him into confronting her at her home with the intention of claiming self-defense should a struggle ensue. The plan works — Doob arrives, a confrontation ensues, and in the midst of a fierce confrontation, Karen ultimately shoots him dead, shutting down his reign of terror once and for all. Moments later, Detective Denillo reappears, his discerning eyes suggesting he is not fooled by her claims of self-defense; yet, her expression is defiant as she challenges him — “Prove it.” When Mack finally joins her, he quietly acknowledges the truth of her actions, taking her hand without the need for words. The haunting journey of loss and vengeance culminates in a poignant silence, leaving them to grapple with the moral ramifications of their newfound reality.
