What Happens in Eragon: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Eragon (2006) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Eons ago, in the enchanting land of Alagaësia, a venerable order known as the Dragon Riders was established with the noble aim of safeguarding the nations and fostering peace across the realm. However, the tranquility was shattered when a once-great Dragon Rider named Galbatorix betrayed the order, leading to its destruction along with the dragons, thus plunging Alagaësia into a dark era under his tyrannical rule. In this tumultuous backdrop, brave rebels known as the Varden rise in opposition to his oppressive regime.

Among the brave souls is Arya, the spirited princess of the elven kingdom Ellesméra, who finds herself fleeing from a sinister dark sorcerer named Durza. During her escape, she carries a peculiar stone that holds the key to the future of the realm. Just as Durza closes in on her, Arya taps into her magical abilities to teleport the stone away moments before she's captured, setting in motion a chain of events that will alter the fate of many.

Meanwhile, in a humble village, Eragon, a poor farm boy living with his uncle Garrow and cousin Roran, discovers the mysterious stone after it appears before him during a hunting expedition. Initially believing it to be a worth trading for food, Eragon soon learns that it is actually a dragon egg, which hatches into a breathtaking blue dragon. As Eragon connects with this magnificent creature, whom he names Saphira, a magical bond forms, leaving a unique mark upon his palm that signifies his newfound destiny.

As news of the hatch spreads, curious individuals, including Arya, an old storyteller named Brom, and Galbatorix himself, take notice of this momentous event. Eragon embarks on an adventure, nurturing and training Saphira, who grows rapidly and develops a telepathic connection with him. Tragedy strikes when the monstrous servants of Durza, known as Ra'zac, invade Eragon's village in search of the dragon and rider, resulting in Garrow's tragic demise. Consumed by guilt, Eragon momentarily distances himself from Saphira, yet Brom arrives, emphasizing her importance and encouraging Eragon to reconnect with her.

After Brom leads Eragon to the Varden, he imparts vital knowledge about the Dragon Riders and their foes, while also training him in the art of swordplay. During their journey, Eragon encounters a fortunetelling witch named Angela, who forewarns him of Arya and the treacherous path that lies ahead. When the Urgals attack, Eragon attempts to channel his magic, mimicking Brom's previous actions, and unintentionally unleashes a powerful blue fire that obliterates their foes before succumbing to unconsciousness.

Brom teaches Eragon to harness his magical abilities and strengthen his bond with Saphira, leading to their first exhilarating flight. Together, they confront and defeat the Ra’zac in a fierce battle, during which Brom reveals his own history as a former Dragon Rider, whose dragon perished at the hands of Morzan, a rogue Dragon Rider allied with Galbatorix.

Conflict escalates when Durza plots a sinister trap using Arya as bait, prompting Eragon to bravely attempt a rescue. Faced with overwhelming odds, Brom comes to his aid but sustains grave wounds in the process. The trio narrowly escapes, but Brom succumbs to his injuries while soaring on Saphira. Inheriting Brom's sword, Zar'roc, which once belonged to Morzan, Eragon now bears the weight of his legacy.

As their journey progresses, Eragon encounters a cloaked figure named Murtagh, who joins their expedition but is later imprisoned by the Varden upon revelations of his lineage as Morzan's son. The Varden's stronghold soon finds itself under siege by Durza’s forces. During the ensuing battle, Eragon, Saphira, and Arya fight valiantly alongside the rebels, while Murtagh manages to escape captivity, playing a crucial role in aiding the Dwarf King Hrothgar.

The aerial confrontation reaches its zenith as Eragon and Saphira face off against Durza. Though victorious, they suffer heavy injuries, particularly Saphira, whom Eragon manages to heal using his magic, though it drains his energy completely. Come morning, Eragon awakens alongside a fully restored Saphira and Murtagh. The trio then reconnects with Arya, who is determined to lead the elves into the impending war against Galbatorix.

In parting, promises of future reunions are made as Arya ventures towards Ellesméra to rally the elves. Meanwhile, Galbatorix, ever menacing, catches sight of his own dark dragon, Shruikan, as he slashes angrily at his map of Alagaësia, a bitter reminder of the world he wishes to conquer. The stage is set for an epic battle between the forces of good and evil, with Eragon at the forefront of the fate that awaits Alagaësia.

Princess Arya was fleeing from the dark sorcerer Durza while carrying the dragon egg when he cornered her. Q2

Why did the Ra'zac attack Eragon's village?

The Ra'zac were sent by Durza to locate the newly hatched dragon and its rider. • eragon village destroyed
Q3

Why did Eragon blame Saphira for Garrow's death?

Eragon blamed Saphira because her existence as a dragon drew the Ra'zac to his village. How did Eragon destroy the Urgals with magic?

Eragon instinctively mimicked the magical channeling Brom had used earlier, attempting to use magic for the first time in a life-or-death situation. The raw power erupted from him in a devastating burst of blue fire that obliterated the Urgals attacking their position. The uncontrolled surge left him completely drained of energy, causing him to collapse unconscious after the blast.

He died shortly after the trio fled on Saphira, passing his sword Zar'roc and his legacy as a Dragon Rider to Eragon.
