The film opens centuries earlier with a young Avatar [Sander Argabrite] racing against other child Airbenders in a spirited flight-off. His hard-won victory is interrupted by Monk Gyatso [François Chau], and when Aang and Gyatso reach the Air Temple, a sudden darkness consumes the scene. He sees the other Air Nomads and Gyatso engulfed in flames, a nightmare that foreshadows a hidden past and a future burden he will shoulder. Cut to years later, an adult Aang wakes from that nightmare, comforted by his animal companions, Appa and Momo. He and his loyal flock move toward an abandoned Air Temple, only to be ambushed by a group known as The Denied, a faction of non-benders obsessed with a totem carved after a mythical figure named Sonam.
In the heat of the confrontation, Aang defends the sacred space and ends up sparring with a young Denied member named Kallik [Geraldine Viswanathan]. A devastating blast nearly brings the temple down, but the Avatar manages to rescue Kallik at the last moment. The Denied escape with a map, leaving Aang to flee with Appa and Momo. He tells them that his next destination must be Republic City, a beacon for rebuilding a world shattered by years of conflict.
A sweeping backward glance reminds us of the long arc of Aang’s life: found in ice, he embraced his destiny as the Avatar, master of water, earth, fire, and air. Katara [Jessica Matten] teaches him waterbending; the blind Toph [Dionne Quan] shows him earthbending; Zuko [Steven Yeun], once an enemy who becomes an ally, teaches firebending; and Sokka [Román Zaragoza], with a sharp mind and practical leadership, demonstrates how to lead with what you already have. Together, they defeat Fire Lord Ozai and end the Hundred Year War, laying the groundwork for Republic City as a place to unite nations and foster healing.
Back in Republic City, Katara addresses a crowd as a council representative before Aang arrives. She tends to his wounds, and he confides concerns about The Denied and their ties to Sonam. Aang attempts to reach past Avatars through the Avatar State, hoping to connect with voices from the past, but none answer—until he meets Avatar Xian [Ke Huy Quan], who reveals startling information. Sonam, he explains, is the “long lost Avatar” from the golden age of the Air Nomads, the creator of a staff capable of channeling Spirit World energy and granting enormous power. Sonam and the staff vanished long ago, and the trail now points to Mount Baihu for clues.
With a sense of urgency, Aang leaves a message for Katara to join him at Mount Baihu, and Katara coordinates with Zuko (now overseeing Fire Lord duties), Sokka (teaching waterbending to children), and Toph (who is teaching metalbending). Aang, Appa, and Momo ascend the snow-capped peak, where a figure is trapped in ice and appears to be Sonam, but the freed man turns out to be another Airbender. The mountain begins to crumble, and the trio must work quickly to safeguard themselves. The stranger awakens and introduces himself as Tagah [Dave Bautista], a wary man who is unsettled by Toph’s presence.
Tagah’s tale unsettles Aang. He explains that Sonam’s staff was never merely a weapon but a gift that powered an ancient Air Nomad city called Jharana. Sonam granted Tagah Airbending even though he was born a non-bender. The revelation shakes Aang, because it means Airbenders could return to the world if the right path is found. Tagah goes on to reveal that the staff’s location is on an island reached only by a path through the sky. As they travel, Tagah demonstrates Airbending learned from Sonam, revealing a joint rhythm that makes them move as one.
The Denied attack their airship in the night, and Tagah uses his Airbending to try to crush their attackers. Katara notices the risky move and the ship endures a brutal ride through the path of the Immortal Storm, a fierce weather system that threatens to scatter them into the ocean. Aang and Tagah share responsibility for guiding everyone through the storm’s eye, while Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko struggle to keep the ship intact. The Skies calm only when they finally escape, though Katara’s faith in Tagah falters as trust frays.
The journey leads them to a cluster of Lion Turtle islands rumored to house the staff. Aang departs with Appa and Momo to locate the staff, while Tagah remains with the others. Katara’s doubt grows into suspicion, and she confronts Tagah. In a tense exchange, Tagah shows his true colors: he believes Katara’s influence to be a weakness for Aang’s true path. He lashes out, attacking Katara and pursuing Sokka, Toph, and Zuko when they intervene. Tagah defeats them and finally comes upon Aang, stealing the staff and locating The Denied, where he uses the staff to grant them bending powers.
Aang, left behind, finds himself transported to a liminal realm where the spirit world and reality blur. There he encounters the spirit of Sonam [Freida Pinto], who reveals Tagah’s tragic history. Once a peaceful man, Tagah’s city of Jharana faced brutal invasion by the Earth Kingdom, and war warped his heart. When Sonam refused to empower vengeance, Tagah stole the staff and merged with the temple’s power, becoming a monstrous figure. Sonam imprisoned Tagah in the mountain and hid the staff away to prevent further catastrophe, sacrificing herself in the process.
Awakening from the vision, Aang enlists the Ocean Spirit to guide them into the Spirit World. The group is scattered across different ages: Aang and Toph as children, Katara and Zuko as elders, and Sokka unchanged. They meet the Gorillavark [Taika Waititi], who initially resists helping, but Momo’s persuasive charm convinces him to assist. The Gorillavark carries the Avatar and friends to their destination, where they confront Tagah as he attempts to bring Sonam’s temple down on Republic City. The Denied unleash their powers, and the heroes rally to fight back.
Aang engages Tagah in a fierce battle while Katara, Zuko, and Toph squeeze out the last of their elements to counter the threat. Sokka brings a timely backup with his “Sokka Cycle,” saving his friends from collapse as chaos swirls around them. The temple finally crumbles, and Tagah merges with the staff’s power, transforming into a raging giant. Aang channels the Avatar State, drawing the staff into himself and ultimately destroying it to strip The Denied of their enhanced powers. Tagah returns to his human form but begins to disintegrate. In a moment of mercy and mercy’s weight, Aang helps Tagah find redemption and peace before he passes away.
In the aftermath, Republic City begins to rebuild, and Aang establishes a new Air Temple to nurture the next generation. He reconnects with Sonam in spirit and reaffirms the promise that the legacy of the Air Nomads will endure. Aang also forms a fresh crew of Air Acolytes, including Kallik—the grateful Denied survivor he saved—so the Air Nomads’ teachings can continue. The story closes with a glimpse of hope: a field of Sky Bison reappears, echoing Appa’s ancient lineage, and the group takes to the skies once more, ready to carry forward the era of peace and renewal.
