Enid Is Sleeping

In a grim, bone-dry flashback set in 1959 Las Moscas, New Mexico, a mother Susan Cash — Mrs. Pearly — is utterly overwhelmed by household chores, two daughters Enid Maureen Mueller and June, and their visiting friend Harry Judge Reinhold. In a moment of shocking brutality, Enid drives a wedge of cruelty into the family when she pushes her baby sister June into the oven while the mother is momentarily away. The scene is stark, chaotic, and chilling in its portrayal of a household teetering on the edge of disaster.

Fast forward to 1984, twenty-five years later, and Enid, now living with an unrewarding marriage to Harry Judge Reinhold, returns home to discover him having an affair with June. Enraged and fearful, she nearly turns deadly, grabbing Harry’s police service gun and aiming it at them. The shot never lands in the way she intends, as June smashes a vase on Enid’s head, leaving her bleeding and seemingly dead. In a panic, the two women decide to stage Enid’s death as a car accident while Enid and June were visiting their mother. The plan is desperate, and the tension crackles as they try to move forward with a fabrication that could unravel at any moment.

Yet the plan starts to unravel almost immediately. Harry’s partner Floyd [Jeffrey Jones] unwittingly interferes, pulling the noose tighter around their fragile ruse and forcing June to contend with her own mounting guilt. The pair find themselves caught in a web of complications as they try to conceal what has happened, and June begins a tense internal monologue with Enid that slows their progress and deepens the emotional conflict at the heart of the story. The dynamics of power, fear, and complicity push each character toward breaking points they never anticipated.

As the group tries to haul Enid’s supposed corpse to a dangerous road curve in the desert for the staged accident, June discovers that an real accident has occurred at the very spot they had chosen. A drunken Brion James trucker adds another layer of risk and unpredictability, attempting to flirt with both June and Enid and forcing June to fend him off while Harry and Floyd are distracted by the unfolding chaos. The encounter with the trucker injects a raw, precarious energy into the already fragile plan, reminding the audience that chance is always waiting to rewrite fate.

Desperation grows as June, unable to push the car off a cliff, ends up dumping Enid in the middle of the desert, only to find herself stuck near an Indian burial ground. She leaves the body and makes a frantic call to Harry from a gas station for help. The ride back is fraught: Harry abandons Floyd at a rest stop, but Floyd soon becomes tangled in danger of his own as he participates in an attempted armed robbery, firing at one robber and scattering his partner in panic. The film tightens its grip as loyalties fracture and each character’s motives become more visible, painting a portrait of a town that reads the surface of everyone’s story but misses the deeper truth underneath.

With Harry’s help, June manages to retrieve the body, but their misdeeds continue to cascade. A road motel stop becomes a stage for another unsettling twist when the drunk trucker returns, and the motel’s manager promptly ejects them. The pursuit grows more absurd and dangerous as a fallen tree forces June to push the car toward the Sanchez River. A young couple witnesses the scene and calls the police, escalating the tension as everyone involved tries to navigate the consequences of actions taken in a moment of panic.

Harry dumps Floyd once again and lends his aid to June as they attempt to pull the car from the river. The adrenaline of the night continues to mount as June, exhausted and stressed, drives home only to fall asleep at the wheel and crash into a billboard. A state trooper pulls her over, but when he opens the trunk, he is knocked unconscious by Enid — alive, groggy, and very much furious — a shocking reversal that flips the entire situation on its head.

June, now frantic and overwhelmed, deposits Enid back at her home, only to be kidnapped by the fugitive robber who remains in the shadows of the town’s memory. Suffering a nervous breakdown, she drives wildly, and in the chaos, the robber drops a lit cigarette into a puddle of leaking gasoline, igniting a blaze that destroys the car and claims the robber’s life. The crime scene is burned beyond recognition, and Enid’s cigarette case is found in the wreck, sealing Enid’s fate in the eyes of the townsfolk.

In the aftermath, the town and its inhabitants read the evidence through the lens of fear and rumor. Everyone, including Harry, assumes that Enid was the victim, a conclusion that brings a grim sense of closure to those who believed in the original narrative. Yet the truth lurks beneath the surface of appearances, and the final moment reveals how fragile memory and justice can be when fear distorts perception. Elated by what they think they’ve accomplished, the townspeople are forced to confront the reality that Enid is not dead and that the surviving players in this deadly game are left to contend with the consequences of their choices.

The film uses stark, clinical storytelling to explore themes of guilt, retribution, and the lengths people will go to protect themselves and those they love. It delves into the corrosive effects of secrets kept within a family and how a single night of violence can fracture a community’s sense of truth. The characters—each pushed to the brink by circumstance—reveal how fear can drive people to rationalize horrific acts, only to discover that the truth has its own, inexorable momentum.
