Three lifeless bodies are discovered rising to the surface of the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts. This eerie event sets a dark tone as it foreshadows the turmoil and violence that is about to unfold.

Thomas Craven welcomes his daughter, Emma, at South Station in Boston. Their reunion is marred by her sudden bout of nausea during the ride home, indicating something is dangerously wrong.

While Thomas prepares a meal, Emma experiences a medical emergency, beginning to bleed from her nose and vomit violently. In a frantic attempt to reach the hospital, a masked gunman appears, calling out Thomas's name before fatally shooting Emma.
