A suspicious Margo Chamberlain hires a private detective to spy on her husband after catching him with another woman. When she receives the confirmation that night, she heads to the location.

On the way, Lance Harper murders Jack Chamberlain, the wealthy woman's husband, with whom Harper was in trouble at the time. The body is stored in the trunk of his Porsche. As the wife arrives to reclaim the Porsche, Harper disappears into the night, and she drives away, unaware that her husband has been murdered and lies under the hood of the car she is driving.

Barry Davis, a college student and piano tuner for his parents' business, is given a metallic grey 1983 Porsche 911 SC convertible for free by Mrs. Chamberlain, who wants to get even with her cheating husband, whom she had originally purchased it for. Davis, who cannot believe his luck, does not realize that Jack Chamberlain's corpse is under the hood of his dream car.

While he evades fraternity boys and pursues his dream girl, Harper tracks him down by phoning every "Barry Davis" in the phone book and asking:

> Is this Barry Davis the piano tuner?

Harper closes in on him, and a fight ensues in the Davis household. Barry ultimately overpowers Harper, and Harper is arrested.
