In 1917 Republican China, a quiet family life unfolds in the remote hills of Yunnan. Liu Jinxi and his wife, Yu, are an ordinary couple living with their two sons, Fangzheng and Xiaotian, in Liu Village. Their days center on hard work, shared meals, and a close-knit community that admires their modest steadiness. But peace shatters when two armed bandits ride into the village and attempt to rob the local general store. Liu Jinxi, who happens to be in the shop, fights back with a calm precision that turns deadly for the attackers, and both bandits are killed when the confrontation turns violent. The village breathes a sigh of relief, and the act of defense leaves everyone with more questions than answers.

The investigation is swift and unsettling. Detective Xu Baijiu is dispatched to examine the scene, and his autopsy reveals a startling detail: one of the dead men is Yan Dongsheng, a man listed among the government’s ten most wanted fugitives. The discovery immediately casts doubt on Liu Jinxi’s heroic image. Xu notices signs of brain hemorrhaging that suggest a significant brain injury—likely caused by Yan Dongsheng’s vagus nerve—and he begins to suspect that Liu Jinxi is not merely a lucky village husband, but a highly skilled martial artist who uses misdirection to mask his true talents.

As Xu digs deeper, a truth begins to emerge: Liu Jinxi’s real identity is Tang Long, the second-in-command of a brutal group known as the 72 Demons. Liu does not deny the past but asserts that he has reformed and left that life behind. Xu, a man of unyielding principles, remains unconvinced that someone can change so completely, and their uneasy dynamic forms the backbone of the pursuit. Yet something about Liu’s behavior—his restraint when they confront each other alone—adds a layer of ambiguity to Xu’s certainty.

A formal arrest seems near, but the local magistrate stalls, ostensibly for lack of evidence while secretly accepting a bribe. Xu secures the bribe money through personal estrangements, tearing at old wounds that blame him for his wife’s father’s suicide. With the warrant finally in hand, the magistrate reveals the fugitive’s whereabouts to the Master of the 72 Demons, hoping for a reward. The Master’s response is sharp and devastating: Liu Jinxi is his son. The revelation costs the magistrate his life, and the Master signals his intent to sweep Liu’s village into ruin unless Liu submits to him.

In moments of heightened peril, the village becomes a battleground. Two henchmen reach Liu Village with orders to force Liu to acknowledge his lineage or face annihilation. Liu fights one of them, killing him, but the other—the Master’s wife—presses Liu into a brutal confrontation inside a buffalo shed. The fight ends with her crushed in a stampede, nearly pulling Liu into a river. Before she dies, she lashes out with a chilling admission: Liu remains Tang Long, the man the Master believes has never truly left his shadow.

Xu Baijiu’s team arrives at a critical juncture. Rather than simply storm the fortress, Xu crafts a cunning plan to stage Liu’s death, hoping to buy time and deplete the 72 Demons’ resolve. The ruse is elaborate, but it falters as the ruse’s duration grows too long. Eventually, Xu is forced to bring Liu back from the brink in front of the assembled 72 Demons, who come to pay respects to their fallen comrade. To prove his loyalty and sever his ties, Liu severs his left arm, a dramatic gesture that signals he will walk away from the brotherhood for good. The 72 Demons accept his withdrawal, yet they insist he must first face the Master, who awaits him at a tense home gathering.

The dinner is a stark portrait of control and coercion. The Master has seized Liu Jinxi’s family as hostages, using their safety to force Liu to make a painful choice. The revelation lands with blunt force: if Liu leaves, Xiaotian must take his place in the ranks of the 72 Demons. Fury and resolve collide as Liu charges the Master with a broadsword. The Master’s qi-aware defense holds fast, and the stalemate seems to favor the supernatural discipline he commands. Xu, slipping through a hidden hatch, undermines the Master’s protection from beneath the floor by piercing the Master’s heel with an acupuncture needle, a small strike that chips away at the Master’s defenses.

The ensuing struggle is brutal and fate-laden. The Master punishes Xu with a powerful counterstrike that nearly ends the detective’s life, leaving him gravely wounded. Liu presses the attack but finds himself increasingly cornered. In a final, desperate turn, Xu drives a second acupuncture needle into the Master’s neck. The Master retaliates with lethal force, fatally wounding Xu. Yet the needles act as conductors, becoming a lightning rod that channels a sudden bolt of lightning. The Master is struck dead as the storm tears through the room, and with Xu’s dying words, the case is declared closed.

With the threat finally dissipated, Liu Jinxi returns to a quieter life, embracing the ordinary rhythms of family days and the safety of his home. The weight of deception, oath, and bloodline lingers, but the path ahead offers a fragile peace. Liu and Yu resume their life, grateful for the chance to raise Fangzheng and Xiaotian in a world where, for a time, the storm has passed. The tale closes on a note of hard-won redemption, a reminder that even the most formidable past can be laid to rest when love and duty converge in the right moment.
