In the film’s climax the militia led by the nameless priest finally breaches Dracula’s ruined castle. The vampire’s gargoyle minions – later revealed to be children transformed by his curse – clash with the attackers, and several of the soldiers, including Henry Spencer, are cut down. Dracula himself confronts the priest, but instead of fighting to the death he allows the priest to deliver the killing blow.

He makes this choice because he has recognised Mina as the reincarnation of his lost bride. Offering her the same immortal fate would bind her to his curse and slowly corrupt her, just as it has done to him and his other thralls. The priest’s compassion forces Dracula to consider the cost of that “eternal love,” and he decides that ending his own existence is the only way to spare Mina from damnation. When the priest’s stake pierces him, the vampire’s curse collapses; the bite that had marked Mina is undone, and she is restored to a mortal life, free to grieve but no longer at risk of becoming a monster.
