Lucky the Dog (voiced by Norm Macdonald) narrates the remarkable ability of Dr. John Dolittle, portrayed by Eddie Murphy, who possesses the unique gift of communicating with animals. Following a trip to France, John returns home and surprises his wife with a present from Paris, along with a special gift for his daughter Maya (played by Kyla Pratt): a charming chameleon named Pepito.
Today marks a special occasion as Charisse (played by Raven-Symoné) celebrates her sixteenth birthday, but her academic struggles have led her father to confiscate her phone as punishment. Charisse’s boyfriend, Eric (voiced by Lil’ Zane), joins them in the birthday festivities. Suddenly, a possum (voiced by Isaac Hayes) and a raccoon named Joey (voiced by Michael Rapaport) inform John about a dire situation: their leader, the Godbeaver (voiced by Richard C. Sarafian), urgently requests to see him.
Upon meeting the Godbeaver, John is alarmed to discover that the forest is being decimated. In an effort to preserve the environment, John vows to rescue an endangered female Pacific Western bear in order to facilitate the survival of their species. He embarks on a mission to bring Archie, the last surviving male of his kind, back to the wilderness to teach him how to embrace his true identity as a bear. While initially reluctant, Archie has never learned what it means to act like a wild animal.
As the Dolittle family vacations in the forest for a month, John strikes a deal with Ava, declaring that he won’t make any decisions during this time and promising to transform Archie into someone who can capture her affection. Amidst his training attempts with Archie, John finds himself neglecting Lisa, which strains their relationship. Meanwhile, Charisse and Eric’s budding romance prompts John to recruit local wildlife to keep them apart.
In a humorous turn of events, as John and Lisa seek to share a moment together, Lucky unintentionally disrupts their connection. Archie tries to impress Ava with his singing, mirroring John’s actions, only to comically fall from a tree branch that couldn’t support his weight. Overwhelmed by embarrassment, Archie hides away in a cave, feeling dejected after his public mishap.
Despite John’s failures, he relates to Archie’s struggles, understanding the pain of inciting anger in loved ones. Frustrated, Archie lashes out at John, who ends up muddy and grounded, leading the bear to listen to his instincts. Romance blossoms as Archie spends time with Ava, who isn’t happy with Sonny (voiced by Mike Epps).
On the other side of the forest, Lucky fails in his pursuit of the captivating female wolf multiple times, while Ava’s relationship with Sonny continues to deteriorate. The looming threat of the logging company, led by Mr. Potter, emerges when Archie announces he has a “big finish.” Back at their cabin, tensions rise as Charisse expresses her displeasure at living among animals. In a daring adventure, Archie manages to retrieve a beehive despite the dangers that lurk.
During a game of hide and seek with Ava, Archie faces a new threat when he’s shot with a tranquilizer dart by Mr. Potter’s apprentice. As chaos unfolds, John learns that Archie has acted recklessly, causing destruction in the forest. He realizes that Charisse has inherited his remarkable ability to communicate with animals. United by a common goal, John gathers all the forest creatures for a motivational meeting, igniting a fierce rebellion against the loggers to save Archie.
In a thrilling climax, a swarm of animals, led by Charisse, Eric, and Maya, join forces to fight back against the loggers. With the strike gaining momentum, animals worldwide join their cause, causing Mr. Potter and his team to face a literal swarm of furious wildlife. As negotiations commence, the Dolittle family, along with their animal allies, succeed in preserving their beloved forest outside San Francisco.
In the end, the bond between John and Charisse deepens, while Archie and Ava finally mate, welcoming new cubs into their family, symbolizing hope for the future.
