Zeenat, an independent Muslim woman from Himachal Pradesh, marries her boyfriend Amir Khan. He leaves for work in Saudi Arabia, and Zeenat stays behind to manage life on her own. The separation sets the stage for Zeenat to seek a path that might save their future.

Meera is a traditional Rajsthani Hindu wife living in a haveli, performing daily chores and upholding customs. Her husband Shankar works in Saudi Arabia and regularly sends his wages home to support the family. The household relies on those remittances to keep the family afloat.

When the remittances stop and there is no word from Shankar, Meera learns that he was killed in a freak accident, allegedly caused by his Muslim roommate. The news devastates her, and the ceremonies to render her a widow drain her emotionally. The family blames Meera for bringing misfortune and reduces her to a scapegoat.

Zeenat discovers that Amir has been arrested for the murder of his roommate and faces a death sentence. An Indian officer explains that in Saudi law, the killer can be released if the wife of the deceased forgives them.

Armed only with a photograph of Shankar and Amir, Zeenat sets out to find Meera. On the road, she encounters a Behrupiya—an artist who mimics people and could be a conman. He steals Zeenat's belongings but later returns to help when she is in trouble, showing a surprising empathy.

They reach Jodhpur and identify the Singh haveli but face the family's anger when Zeenat pleads for Amir's pardon. The Singhs drive her away, unwilling to forgive. The attempt to secure forgiveness fails, signaling a difficult road ahead.

To avoid exposing her identity, Zeenat begins a quiet friendship with Meera at a temple Meera visits daily. The two women open up to each other, sharing burdens and hidden desires. Their bond slowly reveals new possibilities for both women beyond rigid tradition.

Meera experiences a glimpse of freedom and a broader view of life as her friendship with Zeenat deepens. The conversation and companionship begin to loosen the fears and constraints of her veiled life. She starts to imagine a self beyond the haveli's walls.

The Singh family is indebted to Chopra, a local factory owner. Randhir asks for more time to repay, and Chopra proposes to forgive the debt in exchange for Meera's future—effectively selling her into the deal. Randhir accepts this grim offer to keep the family afloat.

When the death sentence news arrives, Zeenat is forced to tell Meera the truth about their friendship having been built on a lie. Meera is hurt and refuses to sign the maafinama, insisting she wants to punish the man who killed Shankar, even if it was an accident. The revelation tests their bond and Meera's new sense of agency.

Zeenat is wounded by Meera's reaction but accepts the turn of fate and decides to leave. She recognizes that her mission cannot be forced and begins to walk away from the haveli. The journey marks a turning point for both women.

Meera, disillusioned by the possibility of being sold, hurries to the railway station to sign the maafinama. In a poignant moment, Zeenat reaches out from the departing train, and Meera grabs her hand and climbs aboard, choosing to escape her old life. The act signals a new beginning for both women as they run toward an uncertain future.
