Philip Van Horn, a failing Hollywood aspirant who left his small hometown years ago, returns for a visit. The townspeople treat him like a celebrity, and he uses the attention to impress his former school love, Dorothy, whose life has grown dull and gray. A rivalry with another local man develops, leaving one of them to lose everything.
