The whole story of Dogman (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Marcello Marcello Fonte is a small, mild man living in a dilapidated beach settlement in Castel Volturno. He runs a dog grooming shop and splits his days between his work, his daughter, Alida Baldari Calabria, who lives with her mother after their separation, and time spent socializing with other locals. He supplements his meager income by selling cocaine to acquaintances.

One acquaintance is Edoardo Pesce as Simone, a huge and thuggish former boxer who terrorizes the neighborhood. The abusive dynamic becomes clear when Simone forces Marcello to take part in a burglary, since he has a van and can drive. The job goes smoothly, but Marcello overhears Simone describe putting a Chihuahua in the freezer to stop it barking. After collecting his share of the loot, Marcello returns, retrieves the dog, and revives it.

Simone continues to cause havoc, punching a restaurateur and breaking his nose. Some locals discuss steps to take, but no action is taken. Marcello remains silent. Later that night, Simone forces Marcello to get cocaine for him from a supplier without paying for it. Accompanying him, Simone is turned down due to his debts. The thug retaliates by beating the dealer and one of his henchmen, taking a haul of cocaine that they consume together in a strip club. On leaving, Simone is shot by a motorbike rider. Marcello declines hospital and instead takes Simone to his mother, Nunzia Schiano, to tend to him, where Simone and his mother quarrel over the cocaine; her anger stems from his addiction.

One day, Simone discovers that Marcello's shop shares a hollow wall with a cash-for-gold shop and plans to rob it. Marcello tries to dissuade him, as the owner is his friend, but Simone bullies him into giving up the key to his own shop. The next morning, Marcello finds that Simone has carried out the robbery, creating a hole in the wall and implicating Marcello. He is arrested. During questioning, a police officer, Aniello Arena, makes it clear they know Simone is responsible and tries to wring a confession from Marcello, but he refuses and is imprisoned.

One year later, Marcello returns home a pariah, even rejected by his cocaine supplier, and has to rebuild his business. Desperate for money, he tracks down Simone and asks for his share of the robbery (around 10,000 euros), only to find it was spent on a motorbike. Simone only gives him 300 euros. Hardened by prison, Marcello wrecks the bike, and the bully beats him up in public. He then hatches a plan for revenge.

A few days later, Marcello locates Simone again, apologizes for the bike, and suggests they rob some cocaine suppliers meeting at his shop. Simone agrees. When Simone arrives, Marcello orders him to hide inside one of the dog cages and wait for his signal. Simone reluctantly complies, only to be locked in by Marcello, who taunts him. Simone tries to kick the door open, sticks his head out, and Marcello knocks him unconscious with a metal bar. Marcello chains Simone to the wall, duct-tapes his ankles, and binds his hands, then tends to his injury. But Simone grabs Marcello, tries to strangle him, and in the struggle, Marcello kills the bully by lowering the grooming table and strangling him with the chain.

Shocked, Marcello tries to dispose of the body by setting it on fire in a field. He seems to hear his old friends playing football in what might be a hallucination, and shouts that the bully is dead, but there is no response. He then carries the body back to the football field, only to find his friends have left. He eventually moves the corpse to a playground in the main square, hoping someone will notice.

Dogman Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Dogman (2019): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Marcello stay silent about Simone's crimes?

Marcello remains silent because he is fundamentally a subdued, non-confrontational man living in a community where speaking out carries serious risks. Additionally, he is financially dependent on Simone as a customer for his cocaine side business, and his quiet nature makes it difficult for him to stand up to the intimidating thug. The locals also discuss taking action against Simone but do nothing, reinforcing the climate of fear and inaction that surrounds him.

  • marcello
  • simone
  • silence
  • complicity
  • coercion
Q2

Why does Marcello rescue the dog from the freezer?

Marcello rescues the Chihuahua because despite his involvement in criminal activities, he has a deep compassion for animals and cannot stand to see one suffer. This act reveals his core kindness and sets up the moral contrast with Simone's cruelty. The dog represents the vulnerable creatures Marcello protects, and saving it demonstrates that his participation in Simone's crimes does not align with his true character.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes establish Marcello as a gentle dog groomer who cares for strays, making this rescue consistent with his character.

  • chihuahua
  • dog rescue
  • compassion
  • simone cruelty
Q3

Why does Marcello take Simone to his mother's house after being shot?

Marcello takes the wounded Simone to his mother Nunzia's house because he refuses to take him to a hospital, which would require explaining how Simone got shot. Despite Simone's brutality towards him, Marcello shows a strange loyalty and perhaps sees this as an opportunity for Simone's mother to care for him. The visit also triggers an argument between Simone and his mother over his cocaine addiction, revealing Simone's personal background.

  • simone shot
  • nunzia
  • mother
  • loyalty
  • hospital
Q4

Why does Marcello refuse to rat on Simone to the police?

Marcello refuses to confess to the police even though they clearly know Simone is responsible for the robbery because he maintains a code of silence rooted in loyalty and fear. By this point in the story, he has already been complicit in Simone's crimes and cannot extricate himself without incriminating himself further. Additionally, his quiet, passive nature makes it psychologically difficult for him to betray someone, even someone who has mistreated him.

  • police confession
  • prison
  • loyalty code
  • arrest
Q5

Why does Marcello go back to Simone after prison to demand his share of the robbery?

After serving a year in prison and returning home as a social pariah, Marcello is desperate for money to rebuild his destroyed business. He tracks down Simone specifically to collect the approximately 10,000 euros he was promised from the robbery, believing he is owed this money for his participation and subsequent imprisonment. When Simone reveals he spent it all on a motorbike and offers only 300 euros, Marcello's desperation turns to hardened anger.

  • money
  • robbery share
  • revenge
  • prison return
Q6

How does Marcello trap Simone in the dog grooming shop?

Marcello orchestrates a fake robbery by telling Simone that cocaine suppliers will meet at his shop. When Simone arrives, Marcello convinces him to hide inside one of the dog cages and wait for the supposed signal. Once Simone is inside, Marcello locks the cage door. When Simone tries to kick his way out and sticks his head through the bars, Marcello strikes him unconscious with a metal grooming bar, then chains him to the wall.

  • trap
  • dog cage
  • revenge plan
  • simone locked
Q7

Why does Marcello kill Simone?

Marcello kills Simone in self-defense during a struggle after having already knocked him unconscious and chained him. When Simone regains consciousness, he grabs Marcello and tries to strangle him. In the ensuing fight, Marcello lowers the grooming table and uses the chain to strangle Simone until he dies. This killing represents Marcello's transformation from passive victim to active aggressor, finally breaking free from the cycle of abuse that has tormented him.

  • murder
  • self-defense
  • strangulation
  • transformation
Q8

What happens to Simone's body after the murder?

After killing Simone, Marcello first tries to burn the body in a field but becomes distracted by hallucinations of his old friends playing football. He then carries the corpse to the football field, only to find his friends have already left. Finally, he moves the body to a children's playground in the main square, leaving it there in hopes that someone will notice and report the crime. Days pass with no reaction from anyone in the community.

  • body disposal
  • playground
  • burning
  • football field
Q9

What do the hallucinations at the end mean?

The hallucinations represent Marcello's psychological break and deep isolation. While burning the body, he imagines his former friends playing football and shouts triumphantly that the bully is dead, but they ignore him completely. This surreal moment underscores his complete social alienation - even in his moment of supposed victory, he is utterly alone. The vision suggests he is seeking validation from a community that has abandoned him.

  • hallucination
  • isolation
  • football
  • mental breakdown
Q10

Why does no one react to the body in the playground?

The complete lack of reaction from the community to a dead body in a children's playground reflects the film's themes of social apathy and moral decay. The residents of Castel Volturno have become so desensitized to violence and crime that they cannot even muster curiosity about a corpse. This disturbing indifference mirrors Marcello's own journey - he has become part of the brutal system he once feared, and his victory rings hollow in a society that has stopped caring.

  • community apathy
  • playground
  • indifference
  • social decay
Q11

What causes Marcello's transformation from quiet man to killer?

Marcello's transformation results from accumulated trauma and humiliation. After a year in prison, he returns to find his life destroyed and his daughter alienated. When Simone publicly beats him and mocks his desire for justice, Marcello reaches his breaking point. Prison has hardened him, stripping away his passivity. His revenge plot represents the emergence of suppressed rage, showing how systemic abuse and neglect can transform a gentle person into something dangerous.

  • transformation
  • violence
  • trauma
  • abuse cycle
  • revenge
Q12

What is the significance of Simone's argument with his mother about cocaine?

The argument between Simone and his mother Nunzia reveals that Simone's violence is partly fueled by a cocaine addiction. His mother angrily confronts him about his drug use, showing that his destructive behavior stems from substance abuse. This detail humanizes Simone slightly while also explaining his erratic, violent nature. It also contrasts with Marcello's own cocaine dealing - Marcello uses drugs as a business, while Simone is enslaved to them.

  • mother
  • drug abuse
