Doctor Sleep

At the end of Doctor Sleep, Dan Torrance returns to the haunted Overlook Hotel, now a broken and dilapidated shell of its former self. His goal is to confront the hotel’s malevolent influence and the ghosts that dwell there, especially in service of protecting Abra Stone, a young girl with powerful shining abilities. The hotel, which functions as a psychic vampire feeding off the “steam” of children, has a deep connection to Dan’s past—having seemingly tried to claim him as a child to feed its hunger. Dan’s visit causes the ghosts of the hotel, including the former ghosts like Lorraine Massey and the spirit of Jack Torrance, to be released and to feed once more, but this time on the femalevolent leader of the True Knot, Rose the Hat. As the ghosts swarm Rose, they consume her completely, ending her reign of terror—and in the process, Dan is wounded, nicked by Rose in a fatal injury. Realizing he’s bleeding out and that the hotel has taken control of him, Dan uses his last strength to activate the hotel’s boiler, which he had rigged beforehand, causing a massive explosion. This destruction kills the hotel once and for all and frees the ghosts trapped within it, including Dan himself, who dies peacefully in the fire, finally at peace and reunited with his mother.

Throughout the film, it becomes clear that the Overlook acts as a metaphor for addiction and the destructive cycles of trauma. Dan’s journey back to the hotel symbolizes his confrontation with his own past, including his father’s alcoholism and violence. Unlike Jack Torrance, Dan manages to find recovery and fights against the hotel’s influence to prevent its cycle of harm from continuing. His sacrifice—dying in the fire—represents breaking free from that cycle, ending the hotel’s feed on innocent children, and securing peace for himself and the spirits he’s helped save. In the final moments, the film also shows Abra, now confident and unafraid, entering the ghostly bathroom where Lorraine Massey’s spirit lingers. Though she is a formidable ghost, Abra, empowered by Dan’s teachings and her own shining strength, is prepared to face or destroy her, symbolizing that she is ready to defend her innocence. The movie closes with the understanding that while Dan is gone, his spirit and lessons will live on through Abra, who now embodies her power and resilience, ready to face what lies ahead. The story ultimately reveals that facing one’s past and confronting inner demons can lead to liberation, and that true peace comes from acceptance, sacrifice, and the hope for a better future.
