In the tumultuous year of 1862, Korea found itself engulfed in chaos as the Joseon dynasty struggled to manage the aftermath of devastating natural disasters and crippling economic issues. Amidst this strife, the ruling aristocracy held absolute power, cruelly exploiting the impoverished masses who faced widespread hunger, death, and suffering. Rising against this oppression was the infamous Chusul clan, a group committed to resistance, robbing corrupt officials and redistributing their ill-gotten wealth to those in dire need.
The film kicks off with an audacious raid on Governor Choi’s estate—a notorious figure in the Naju region, known for his brutal rule. The Chusul clan successfully confiscated the governor’s rice stores, distributing the precious grain to the starving populace before executing Choi and his men without hesitation. In the midst of this rebellion, Dol Mo-chi—a humble butcher—was confronted with an agonizing decision: he could either fulfill a hit job requested by the merciless young nobleman Joo Yoon for a substantial monetary reward or retain his moral integrity. Ultimately, as the pivotal night unfolded, Mo-chi’s ethical compass prevailed, allowing the intended victim to flee unharmed.
The repercussions of Mo-chi’s choice were immediate and devastating: he was attacked in his own home, forcing him and his family to escape as their dwelling erupted in flames. Against all odds, he survived the inferno only to be captured by Joo Yoon’s henchmen and imprisoned, facing a grim fate of execution at dawn, orchestrated by the newly bribed governor.
As the plot thickens, we uncover the troubled past of Joo Yoon, who was born to a prostitute but raised as the heir to a nobleman, Joo Won-sook. His life took a dark turn when Won-sook’s legitimate wife gave birth to a son, Seo-in, demoting Yoon’s status and igniting a simmering resentment that propelled him toward a life of bitterness and cunning, alongside his extraordinary martial arts abilities.
While Mo-chi languishes in prison, he remains unaware that the woman he was meant to assassinate is actually Seo-in’s pregnant wife, whose child represents a direct threat to Joo Yoon’s claim to the Joo family legacy. The fates of these individuals are intricately woven together as they navigate the treacherous landscape of 19th-century Korea, where survival and power come at a daunting price.
Just when Mo-chi seems destined for doom, he is unexpectedly rescued by bandits who embrace him into their ranks, nicknaming him “Dochi.” Under their guidance, he rapidly evolves into a formidable fighter, gaining the admiration of fellow outlaws within just two years. Taking a paternal role, Dochi commits himself to nurturing Seo-in’s son, who has lost his mother, treating him as his own.
Concurrently, Joo Yoon is busy manipulating the poor through deceitful contracts, gradually tightening his grip on Naju. Outraged by his exploitation, the bandits orchestrate a bold raid on the town, culminating in a climactic confrontation between Dochi and his adversary, Joo Yoon. The battle is fierce but short-lived, as Dochi cunningly leads Joo Yoon into a trap set by his ally Dae-ho, allowing the bandits to reclaim the rice reserves and ease the suffering of Naju’s citizens. Although Joo Yoon narrowly escapes and causes immense destruction—including the death of Dae-ho and serious injuries to Dochi—his reign of terror is far from over.
Following this turbulent raid, Joo Yoon unleashes vicious retaliation against the townsfolk, mass imprisoning them. During this chaos, one of the bandits, Tteang-choo, is captured and subjected to horrific torture in an effort to extract the location of the band’s hideout. As Joo Yoon leads a punitive raid against the bandits, he scorches their stronghold and inflicts severe losses while reclaiming his nephew. Meanwhile, the wounded Dochi is unable to intervene in the ensuing battle but resolves to seek vengeance.
With the surviving government troops facing mass execution at dawn, Dochi swoops in with a Gatling gun, wreaking havoc on the soldiers. The oppressed townspeople, fueled by their collective anger, rally around Dochi, uniting for one final assault on Joo Yoon’s manor. As the two foes meet for their fateful duel amidst the bamboo groves, Joo Yoon remains eerily calm in the face of defeat. When their battle reaches a crescendo, Dochi catches Joo Yoon off guard, ultimately delivering a death blow while Joo Yoon clutches his nephew. In the end, the wrathful mob of Naju delivers their own brand of justice, driving a spear into Joo Yoon’s back without mercy.
As the dust settles and the tumult of conflict wanes, Dochi rises to become the indomitable leader of his bandit group. With the precious child safely in his care, he leads the remaining outlaws and steadfast citizens of Naju toward a hopeful future, lighting the flame of rebellion for the Chusul clan. This fiery spirit, once the driving force behind their desperate fight, now serves as a beacon of hope as Dochi’s unwavering commitment to safeguard his people propels them into an uncertain yet resolute future.
