Debbie Strand is introduced as a stunning yet calculating psychopath who escapes the confines of a mental institution after a female orderly tries to assault her. Her departure sets off a chain of chilling decisions: Debbie steals the identity and car of a teenage girl who had taken her in, then heads to a college campus to begin anew as a freshman under a borrowed name.

On the campus, Debbie quickly fixates on her new target, Sam Deckner, a charming writing professor whose personality and shared interests draw her in from their very first encounter. To shape the illusion of a richer life, Debbie assumes the deceased girl’s identity as the daughter of a wealthy family, adopting the name of Tracy Carley. This new life brings her into the same dorm as Laney, a naïve roommate who becomes unwittingly entangled in Debbie’s scheme.

As Debbie’s fixation on Sam deepens, her behavior grows more dangerous. She begins to kill anyone she believes could threaten the fragile construct of their relationship, drawing a widening net of fear and suspicion around her. Laney eventually discovers Debbie’s dark past, setting off a terror-filled moment of revelation. Tragically, Laney’s discovery leads to her death, a shock Debbie tries to pass off as a suicide to the authorities.

Undeterred, Debbie continues to stalk Sam, while the threat to Sam’s girlfriend Carla Briggs intensifies. Carla reveals she is pregnant, a revelation that heightens Debbie’s jealousy. In a desperate attempt to sever the danger to her bond with Sam, Debbie targets Carla, sneaking into her home at night, arming herself with a knife, and lurking in the shadows. The plan is thwarted by the presence of two police officers, whom Debbie wounds before a chaotic struggle results in her injuring herself.

The climax arrives on a tense road, where Debbie, wounded and cornered, is pulled from the scene by the father of the real Tracy Carley. He notes the stark resemblance to his daughter and reflects on his own child’s troubled school life, leaving Debbie’s fate intertwined with the unanswered questions about identity, danger, and a disturbed obsession that refused to let go.
