Vic and Melinda Van Allen live in the small town of Little Wesley, Louisiana, along with their daughter Trixie. Their marriage is characterized by a lack of passion, as they maintain a precarious arrangement that allows Melinda to have multiple lovers without leaving the family.

Melinda deliberately provokes Vic by asking for his input on her outfits for her dates with other men. This arrangement fuels Vic's jealousy, as he grapples with the reality of their open marriage, which is no secret among their friends.

Vic has a unique hobby of maintaining a snail farm in his garage. In contrast, Melinda struggles with motherhood, often appearing irritated with Trixie, while Vic and Trixie bond over their shared understanding and support.
