Death of a Superhero

Don, a 15-year-old, struggles under the weight of his terminal cancer diagnosis. Feeling lost, he contemplates ending his life by the train tracks, but ultimately decides to hold on for a bit longer.

In an effort to help him cope, Don's parents send him to therapy with psychiatrist Dr. Adrian King. Initially resistant to the therapy, Don expresses his disdain by vandalizing King's boat with a graffiti mark, a Skull 'n' Crossbones.

During one of their school encounters, Shelly impresses Don with her quick thinking by improvising an essay. This moment sparks a connection between them as they begin to exchange notes and plan to attend a weekend party.

At the party, Don and his friends concoct a drink recipe blending wines and beers. However, amidst the festivities, Don catches sight of his hallucinated tormentor, leading him to graffiti her image on a school window, which results in his suspension.

As Don tries to remove the graffiti, Shelly approaches to help, fostering a deeper friendship. They have a meaningful rooftop conversation where Shelly admires Don's artistic talents, calling him beautiful.

Things take a turn when an embarrassing video of Shelly circulates, igniting rumors that hurt their relationship. When confronted, Don defensively denies his feelings for Shelly, leading to her storming off.

At home, heartbroken and overwhelmed, Don lashes out at Dr. King during a confrontation about his emotional turmoil. This leads him to a panic attack and a grim hospital revelation that his cancer has progressed significantly.

In the hospital, Don forms a bond with a young cancer patient who dreams of being a dancer. Through their conversations, Don reveals his longing to become a superhero, showcasing his inner desires despite his illness.

In a misguided effort, Don's brother and friends approach several girls to ensure Don does not die a virgin. While one girl agrees to meet him, Don remains distracted by memories of Shelly and his evolving feelings about love.

Haunted by the hallucinated medic woman, Don realizes it’s time to apologize to Shelly. He rushed to find her, leading to a serene moment where they walk hand in hand along the beach.

During their beach stroll, Don asks Shelly to promise him she'll visit the beach whenever she feels down, so she can remember him. This moment cements their bond as Don finally finds a sense of closure.

Don passes away peacefully in his bed, surrounded by the memories of his friendships and relationships. His tranquil departure leaves a heartfelt legacy for those who loved him.

In the aftermath of Don’s passing, Shelly watches Dr. King board his sailboat, which is now adorned with Don's signature skull design. This reflection symbolizes the impactful yet fleeting nature of their time together.
