Dark Encounter

In November 1982, Ray and Olivia return to their home to find Maisie missing. The family begins a frantic search and the town rallies around the case, treating it as a suspected abduction. The air thickens with grief, fear, and unspoken guilt.

A year later, relatives gather for a dinner at Ray and Olivia's house. Old tensions surface as Ray argues with his brother Billy. The gathering exposes the fragile state of the family as they try to navigate their loss.

After dinner, Morgan offers advice on grief, but Ray makes clear he has no intention of moving on. He refuses to let the memory of Maisie fade or soften his pain. The conversation underscores the chasm between the two brothers.

A strange play of light appears in the forest and Ray leads a small group to investigate. Morgan, Billy, Sheriff Kenneth, and Noah join him and witness electricity sparking and a crosswise light. Morgan disappears abruptly while Kenneth falls into a catatonic stupor.

The car ride back is tense as Morgan remains missing. Olivia and Arlene back at the house are startled by rumbling noises and a growing sense that something otherworldly is at work.

Billy, Olivia and Noah flee to the nearest country road and witness a spectacular light show in the night sky. A sheriff and another policeman pick them up and drive them back to the house. The trio refuses to divulge details of what happened, insisting only that they were tormented by an unseen trio and then choose to barricade themselves in Maisie’s bedroom.

Back in town, a crowd gathers at the police station and a policewoman describes similar occurrences to the sheriff. The authorities begin to connect the night events with the disappearances around Maisie. The sense of fear spreads through the community as rumors grow.

In the bedroom, an alien touches Olivia and she is pulled into a vision of a copy of the house. She watches past events unfold through the windows, including the moments leading to Maisie’s disappearance.

The vision reveals Sheriff Kenneth visiting Maisie, raping her, and killing her before burying her in the forest where the light shows began a year later. The truth finishes like a jolt, shattering Olivia's sense of safety and blurring the line between reality and the otherworldly.

The house walls crack and Olivia wakes, lying in Maisie’s bed. Her son calls from across the room and they embrace, beginning to process what happened. The shared trauma begins to reshape their relationship and resolve.

The disappeared characters slowly reappear in the house, all with nosebleeds and shaken by what they have learned. Their shared knowledge makes them confront Sheriff Kenneth and the crowd demands accountability. The family members grapple with the implications of the revelation.

A search party is organized and Maisie’s body is found, bringing a grim second funeral to close the chapter. The sheriff credits the aliens with guiding the search, introducing an uncanny ending to the case. The community must come to terms with both tragedy and the impossible.

The sheriff speaks to the press on television about the extraordinary events. In a final intimate moment, Ray and Olivia lie in bed and begin to find inner peace after confronting unspeakable truths and accepting the unimaginable. The film closes on a note of uneasy calm and tentative healing.
