Dark Matter

Loosely inspired by the true story of Gang Lu, a Chinese physics student, this film presents a compelling narrative with significant differences in its plot and character motivations. The story follows Liu Xing, portrayed by Liu Ye, a humble yet exceptionally talented Chinese student who makes his way to Valley State University. Here, he faces the challenges of adapting to American life, but he finds a mentor in Joanna Silver, played by Meryl Streep, a wealthy benefactor of the university who takes a special interest in his journey.

Eager to pursue his passion for cosmology, Xing joins an esteemed research group led by his idol, the acclaimed Professor Jacob Reiser, portrayed by Aidan Quinn. The group’s ambitious goal is to formulate a model depicting the origins of the universe grounded in Reiser’s theoretical framework. As Xing’s formidable talent becomes evident, he quickly rises to the status of Reiser’s protégé. It appears that through dedication and hard work, a promising career in the field of science is well within his reach.

However, as Xing dives deeper into his studies, he becomes increasingly fixated on the concept of dark matter. This enigmatic substance, which he believes plays a crucial role in shaping the universe, poses a challenge to Reiser’s established model. As Xing starts to achieve significant scientific breakthroughs, he realizes that the path to his aspirations is fraught with unforeseen obstacles, leading to a gripping exploration of ambition, conflict, and the pursuit of knowledge.
