Harry Crowl, also known by his prison number 39013 (Thirty Nine - Oh - Thirteen), hatches a plan to ruin Horace Granville. 39013 ambushes Granville, kidnapping him and imprisoning him inside his own house. He disguises himself as a frail old man and moves into a clean room behind a glass barrier, with only Granville’s doctor allowed past the barrier. This arrangement allows 39013 to assume Granville's life while maintaining a medical sheen to his deception.

Within the Granville estate, a secret room holds the real Granville in a cell that mirrors 39013's own confinement. The room is rigged: if 39013 fails to return, a dripping reservoir will dry up and trigger deadly gas capsules. Granville mutters a chilling line, 'You best hope I continue to live, Granville.'
