Antonio Blasi, unemployed and desperate to marry his girlfriend Nadia, decides to rob a security van for money. He believes the heist will secure a better future, but the plan quickly spirals out of control. The decision drags him into a violent showdown with the police.

During the robbery, the driver is killed and the robbers exchange fire with the officer guarding the bank. Blasi, who has never killed anyone, is forced by his partners to shoot the policeman. He escapes in shock, his conscience weighed down by what he has done.

Blasi, terrified, stops a car and forces the driver to yield; the vehicle belongs to Pasquale Ragusa, brother of the local boss. He discovers burning documents from Rome, including a minister's corrupt letter. The revelation connects Blasi to a dangerous political corruption network.

Ragusa's men are ordered to capture Blasi and escalate the chase. They murder Blasi's father by throwing him into a millstone, magnifying the violence of the pursuit. Blasi becomes a hunted man with a heavy personal cost.

Blasi and Nadia flee to a country farm once owned by Blasi's grandfather, now abandoned. Ragusa's killers close in as they head toward Castel del Monte. In a tense confrontation, Blasi gains the upper hand by killing one attacker and continues to run.

Giacomo Maselli, director of La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, is frustrated by police brutality and begins to investigate. He identifies the identity of the policeman's killer from the bank robbery and gathers the killer's confession, determined to help him in any way possible.

After reading about Blasi's identity, Jacovella uses Maselli to counter Ragusa's threats and protects the journalist from an imminent attack. An agent shoots and kills Pasquale Ragusa, saving Maselli and disrupting Ragusa's plan.

Jacovella attends the funeral of Ragusa's brother, angering the boss and signaling the depth of the feud between the police and the crime family. The city watches as this public display heightens the stakes for everyone involved. The police and press dynamics remain strained.

Maselli and Nadia urge Blasi to surrender, convinced he has no future if he stays on the run. Maselli informs the commissioner that Blasi will deliver himself to the newspaper office that evening, coordinating the plan to bring him in.

At the gates of the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, Ragusa's sniper shoots Blasi as he approaches to hand himself in. He dies in Nadia's arms, with Maselli and Jacovella nearby. The recovered letter reveals a contact between the corrupt minister and Ragusa, a document that will enable the authorities to arrest the boss.
