What Happens in Cross of the Seven Jewels: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Cross of the Seven Jewels (1987) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The film opens with a sadomasochistic satanic sect led by a priest who evokes the demon Aborym with a ritual. A few years later, Marco Sartori, a Roman bank employee, travels to Naples to locate his cousin Carmela, whom he hasn’t seen for years. They meet at the train station, chat at a bar, and wander through the busy streets, when four muggers snatch a precious jeweled cross from Marco that he wears around his neck. With the help of the police, Marco tries to track the thieves, but the cross has already changed hands.

The next day, Marco discovers that the girl who waited for him at the station isn’t actually his cousin, but a friend of hers, Elena, who may have fallen in love with him. Undeterred, he presses on with the search. After meeting a girl named Maria in a disco, Marco goes to a Camorra boss. The boss, knowing his line of work, offers a deal: return a list of bank accounts in exchange for the cross, but Marco refuses and is beaten by the boss’s henchmen.

The following evening, after being rescued and hosted at Maria’s house, he visits a fence named Totonno ’o Cafone in hope of locating the cross. He learns it has already been sold by Don Raffaele Esposito, a powerful Camorra boss from Somma Vesuviana. At midnight, Marco transforms into a werewolf and kills the fence. Nightmares reveal that Marco was born from a relationship between his mother and the demon Aborym, and that he is doomed to transform into a werewolf every night unless he wears the jeweled cross.

Returning to normal, Marco continues the search and reaches Don Raffaele Esposito: mistaking him for a police officer, Esposito imprisons Marco, who, after midnight, frees himself by turning into a werewolf and massacring the Camorra members. Learning that the cross is in the hands of a Roman fortune teller named Armisia, Marco heads back to Rome to recover it. When he reaches her house, he again becomes a werewolf and kills her during sexual intercourse. Thanks to Maria’s intervention, the cross is recovered and Marco regains his human appearance. Just as he holds onto the cross again, the priest from the opening scene who had evoked Aborym dies in a car accident. The film ends with Marco and Maria strolling through St. Peter’s Square, and a translucent apparition of Jesus Christ appearing to symbolize the protagonist’s newfound serenity.

Cross of the Seven Jewels Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Cross of the Seven Jewels (1987): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Marco transform into a werewolf?

Marco transforms into a werewolf because he was born from a relationship between his mother and the demon Aborym. This demonic parentage cursed him to become a werewolf every night unless he wears a special jeweled cross that suppresses the transformation. The curse is an inherent part of his bloodline, making the nightly transformation unavoidable without the cross's protective power.

Foreshadowing: The opening ritual scene establishes Aborym as a supernatural force that will later define Marco's fate.

  • werewolf curse
  • demon aborym
  • bloodline
  • cursed transformation
  • demonic parentage
Q2

How does the jeweled cross protect Marco?

The jeweled cross acts as a supernatural barrier that suppresses Marco's werewolf transformation. When he wears it around his neck, the cursed metamorphosis is prevented, allowing him to remain in human form. Once the cross is removed or stolen, Marco loses this protection and transforms at midnight, losing control and becoming violent.

Foreshadowing: The cross is introduced early as Marco's precious possession, hinting at its importance beyond mere sentimentality.

  • jeweled cross
  • werewolf prevention
  • supernatural protection
  • curse suppression
  • metamorphosis
Q3

Why does Marco kill Totonno the fence?

Marco kills Totonno during his werewolf transformation because the curse takes full control of him at midnight when he is not wearing the cross. Totonno had information about the cross being sold to Don Raffaele Esposito, but Marco could not contain his transformation and slaughtered him while in werewolf form, acting purely on instinct and violence.

Foreshadowing: The film's pacing builds toward this first major violent outburst once Marco loses the cross.

  • totonno
  • murder werewolf
  • midnight transformation
  • lost control
  • camorra fence
Q4

Why does Marco kill Armisia the fortune teller?

Marco kills Armisia because he again transforms into a werewolf when he reaches her house without the cross to protect him. This transformation occurs during sexual intercourse with Armisia, causing him to violently attack and kill her while in his cursed form. The scene demonstrates how the curse overwhelms Marco whenever he is separated from the cross.

Foreshadowing: Marco's pattern of transformation follows the same tragic cycle each time he is without the cross.

  • armisia
  • fortune teller
  • werewolf attack
  • sexual encounter
  • murder rome
Q5

What is the connection between the demon Aborym and Marco?

The demon Aborym is Marco's biological father. Marco's mother had a relationship with the demon, which resulted in Marco's birth and his cursed condition. This supernatural parentage is revealed through Marco's nightmares, explaining why he is destined to become a werewolf every night unless protected by the cross.

Foreshadowing: The opening ritual explicitly invokes Aborym, creating the supernatural foundation for Marco's later revelations.

  • demon aborym
  • supernatural father
  • bloodline curse
  • demonic offspring
  • nightmares origin
Q6

Why does the priest who invoked Aborym die at the end?

The priest dies in a car accident as a narrative mechanism to signify the end of Aborym's supernatural hold over Marco. With the cross recovered and the priest's death, the occult thread that connected the demon to the mortal world is severed. This marks the liberation from the demonic influence that plagued Marco throughout the film.

Foreshadowing: The opening ritual establishes the priest as the link between the human world and Aborym, making his death the logical conclusion to that connection.

  • priest death
  • aborym connection
  • car accident
  • occult thread
  • liberation demon
Q7

Why does Maria help Marco recover the cross?

Maria helps Marco because she has fallen in love with him after meeting him at a disco in Naples. Despite knowing about his dangerous situation and the curse, she shelters him after he is beaten by the Camorra and actively assists in his quest to retrieve the cross.
