Crook’s Tour

Charters and Caldicott, two British characters, are traveling through Saudi Arabia when their vehicle breaks down unexpectedly. During their journey, they meet a local caravan and are invited by a sheikh to dinner, where they are offered Camels and learn about his fears of being spied on his oilfield. These early events set the stage for their international espionage adventures.

The duo returns to Baghdad and visits a night club, where they expect to meet spies. A glamorous performer, La Palermo, accidentally delivers a secret note hidden on a record to them, mistaking their order as part of a spy code. The arrival of real spies, two Americans, reveals the mistake, escalating the suspicion surrounding the characters.

Charters and Caldicott board a flight heading to Istanbul but are directed to a false hotel, indicating they are being misled. La Palermo is supposed to perform there to signal the presence of danger, hinting at an ongoing conspiracy aimed at them. Tensions rise as they realize they are targets in a spy game.

In Istanbul, the spies plan to kill Charters and Caldicott by setting a booby trap in their hotel room, involving a large hole dropping into the Bosporus. During an accident, Charters mistakenly believes he has hurt Caldicott and slaps him, causing Caldicott to fall into the trap, which leads to their hurried departure from Istanbul.

Fearing retribution after the failed assassination attempt, Charters and Caldicott escape to Budapest. They are accompanied by Edith, Charters' sister, who arrives in an effort to locate their hotel. Meanwhile, La Palermo attempts to find the stolen record in her quest to uncover the spies' plans.

The duo tracks La Palermo to a local night club where she is performing the song 'Gypsy Lover.' They retrieve the record from her, but are surprised when their contact dismisses the importance of cricket, hinting at a coded message or misunderstanding in the spy plot.

Charters and Caldicott travel by train east to the Hungarian border, aiming to follow the trail of the spies. Their journey brings them closer to La Palermo's location at a hilltop castle, where they believe key evidence or the spies themselves are hiding.

At the castle on the hill, they are caught by the spies but manage a daring escape thanks to La Palermo, who has arranged blanks in the guns. The escape allows them to flee the immediate danger and continue their mission, signaling a turning point in the spy chase.

The characters are rushed to an airport by a driver, and they flee via boat across the Adriatic Sea. This crucial transportation marks their move back toward England and signifies the culmination of their international adventure, moving closer to resolving the spy plot.

Back in London, La Palermo shares a kiss with Caldicott as their train nears the city. Their return signifies the conclusion of their espionage endeavor, with the spies' plans thwarted and the characters crossing international borders to safety.
